Pro-life Rosary held Sunday

- By COREY MAXWELL Managing Editor

MINSTER — A pumpkin memorial for the unborn was held Sunday night on the front steps of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Minster.

Minster’s youth led a pro-life Rosary on the front steps, surrounded by more than 300 pumpkins that were carved with a cross into them.

The pumpkins were there to represent the number of abortions that take each day in the U.S., with each pumpking representing more than seven lives, according to Sta

cie Lamm, the event organizer.

“Our prayers are what we can offer up but there’s also

help,” said Lamm. “We can

show them direction. We can guide them, we can support them with their finances. But our prayers are the No. 1 thing that can help them. Doing this Rosary as a community, it speaks volumes for the little kids all the way up to the grandparents. It’s just a way for us to gather.”

Minster student Mary Schmiesing felt it was a nice way for the community to come together.

“We’re in such a small town and have a very little population. Seeing everyone come out here today means a lot to me personally because every pumpkin means seven lives,” she said. “When you see a small community, less than half of these can take out a whole community. It means a lot to me that we’re all here fighting for the same belief. We’re just fighting for the right to life. We want to stop abortion.”

Students recited the Rosary with several taking turns to light the candles inside the pumpkins.

The pumpkins were donated by Sherry Warner of the Green Thumb.

“She’s a big proponent of the life. She loves that we

come out there,” said Lamm.

“She donates them complete, we go out there and we pick them.”

The event has become an annual thing, which started close to 10 to 15 years ago,

according to Lamm.

“We just kept going. Through different youth

ministers, it’s continued to grow,” she said. “This is the first time that we’ve offered the Rosary. It’s been just a little different each time.”

The morning started with an All Saints Day Mass’.

“We have over 80 to 90 kids dress up as our saints. They came and they taught us how to live our life,” said Lamm. “So we need to be the saints of this generation. To do that, we need to stop the evils of this world. Abortion is one of those evils that need to be stopped.”

She thanked the community for their support in coming out on Sunday night.

“Our community is amazing and we’re just grateful that we have these freedoms,” said Lamm. “So until we can’t do this anymore, we will continue to shout from the rooftops.”
