Wildcats grab first win of season over weekend

ANNA — The Minster boys collected the first win of the 2021-22 season as they edged Anna 44-43 in non league play on Saturday.

The Wildcats are now 1-5.

Each team scored 12 points in the first quarter. Anna then had nine to Minster’s eight in the second for a 21-20 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, Minster outscored the Rockets 11-8, and take a 3129 lead. Anna put up 14 points in the final eight minutes, but Minster scored 13 and hung on.

Devan Wuebker led the Wildcats with 15 points and Johnny Nixon had 14.

McKane Finkenbine carried the load for Anna, scoring 30 points. Anna won the JV game 47-42. Minster (0-2 MAC, 1-5 overall) will travel to Versailles on Thursday. JV play will begin at 5 p.m.

New Bremen 67, Mississina­wa Valley 24

UNION CITY — New Bremen easily won over host Mississina­wa Valley 67-24 in non league play.

Nick Alig and Colten Muether had 13 points each for the Cardinals (6-2).

The Cardinals put up 19 points in the first quarter and 21 in the second, while holding the Blackhawks to nine points total in those periods.

The third quarter was more balanced, with New Bremen getting 18 points to MV’s 15, then had nine points in the fourth, while the Blackhawks were shut out.

Alig had eight points and Trevor Bergman five in the first period. Alig and Tate Roetgerman each had a three and a two in the second. Muether scored eight in the third.

New Bremen (2-0 MAC, 6-2) will travel to Jackson Center on Thursday with JV at 5 p.m.

ANNA — Anna defeated Minster 39-38 in a non league matchup on Saturday afternoon.

Kaycie Albers had 13 points for the Lady Wildcats, now 6-3 on the season.

Leading Anna was Kaylie Brewer with 14 points.

The first period was high scoring with Minster getting 19 points to Anna’s 11. Albers made a pair of 3-pointers, and Katie McClurg had a two and a three. Ella Mescher scored four points, with Morgan Sparks and Anna Larger getting one basket each.

In the second, Minster had a onepoint edge and led 28-19 at halftime. Albers scored two baskets and made a free throw, with Lilly Barhorst and Larger making one shot apiece.

Anna then rallied in the third, outscoring Minster 12-3 and tying the game at 31. Barhorst made a shot from the floor and McClurg sank one at the line.

In the fourth, the Lady Rockets got eight to Minster’s seven. Corrine Meiring and Albers had one basket each. Sparks made two free throws and Barhorst connected once.

Minster (3-0 MAC, 6-3) will host Jackson Center on Tuesday night.
