Bergman: From out of our past

100 Years Ago March 16, 1923

A German newspaper that was establishe­d in Minster almost one-half century ago passed off the stage of action with the issue of last week. It was the “Sterndes westlichen Ohio” (Star of Western Ohio) published by the Home Printing company at New Bremen. The records show that its founder was a schoolteac­her by the name of Schiffer and that it was considered as a Minster enterprise for about five years. In 1879 it was moved to New Bremen.

The members of the Minster council are getting close to that point where they can give out some reliable informatio­n to the public concerning the possibilit­y of gas being brought into the village for use in the households.

Mr. Harry Heckman arrived from Cincinnati to take up work in the mechanical department of the Post Printing Co. Mr. Heckman was born in this city, started out as a printer while making his home in Minster. For the past eleven years he has been located in the Queen City and has had the advantage of the big shop.

75 Years Ago March 12, 1948 Minster Boy Scouts Win Trophy

at Honor Court. – Many advancemen­ts awards are made at county quarterly event at Wapakoneta. A traveling trophy was among the awards presented for attendance in a three-month period and was captured by Troop 44 of Minster for which Robert Bernhold is scoutmaste­r. (The trophy is still in Troop 44’s Scouthouse) Second class awards were presented to Don Frericks, Pat Kuhn and Donald Kemper; First Class to Norman Bertke; Merit Badges to Donald Oldiges, Joe Sherman, Norman Bertke, Larry Kemper, Jim Weghorst and Bobby Hoying. Life awards to James Weghorst, Joe Sherman, and Don Oldiges.

Minster High School Entered Second Time – If burglars who entered Minster high school last Saturday night for the second time were after cash they were again disappoint­ed. After forcing entrance through an outside door, forcing the door to the superinten­dent’s office and jimmying open a roll top desk, they left with 59 cents.

The Minster Lumber company has installed an intercommu­nication system which will save officials and employees many steps each day.

Village to Need $111,000 to Operate in “48 – Minster will need approximat­ely $111,000 to meet its operating expenses in the 12 months of the current calendar year according to the annual appropriat­ions ordinance which has been given approval of the council, Maurice C. Bernhold, village clerk, said Thursday.

50 Years Ago March 15, 1973

Bollheimer Beat Out in End – In the tenth and final week of play in the euchre tournament held at Ft. Loramie, Bob Poeppelman took second place for the evening and captured the tournament by beating Don Bollheimer out by eight points.

Crystal Ballroom Celebrates Twenty-Fifth Anniversar­y – In the spring of 1948 a thought was turned into a real live dream. Earl Baltes, along with his mother and father and the late LeRoy Baltes began building one of the finest ballrooms in the Midwest.

Paul Kitzmiller Named Manager of the Year – Paul Kitzmiller, District 2, Lake Loramie State Park was one of four state park managers to receive the 1972 District Park Manager of the Year Award,
