BURLINGTON - Dr. Amanda D. Lange, M.D. died peacefully on March 1, 2024, at 84 years old in Burlington, North Carolina. She was born Amanda Winston Darnell on July 1, 1939 in Louisville, Kentucky, the daughter of James Samuel Darnell, Jr. and Prudence Chinn Mason Darnell.

Amanda was a mighty force of a woman, a change maker, and a gentle soul. Her daily motto was that our human mission is to love others and utilize our gifts to assist humanity. She lived and breathed philanthro­py and social justice, donating her time to local organizati­ons.

Amanda described herself as an inquisitiv­e and curious child, who loved to dance, sing, and read. She attended The Kentucky Home School for Girls (Kentucky Country Day School) in Louisville, Kentucky, playing field hockey and excelling academical­ly. She believed it was God’s calling that she become a doctor, as a devout Presbyteri­an and faithful Christian.

Amanda began her collegiate education at Randolph Macon Women’s College and completed her B.S. in Microbiolo­gy at the University of Kentucky (1961). She performed research at Harvard University in Boston and abroad in Wales, before attending the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, graduating second in her class (1971). She retired in 2014, after 40 years as a family physician in Frankfort, Kentucky.

Amanda relocated to Twin Lakes Community in Burlington, NC to be closer to family, where she continued volunteeri­ng and spoiling her grandchild­ren. She fiercely loved her friends/family, enjoyed watching movies, and listened to classical music.

Amanda Lange is survived by three children, her eldest son Jeremy Blackburn Lange of Philadelph­ia, PA (wife Kate and daughter Julia) and her twin children, son Dr. Miles Darnell Lange, Ph.D. of Auburn, Alabama and daughter Dr. Elizabeth Hunt Lange, Ed.D. of Chapel Hill, NC (partner Melanie and children Hudson & Harper). Amanda had one beloved sister, who preceded her in death, Prudence Mason Darnell Montague (1940-1995), married to Robert Latane Montague III of Alexandria, VA.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 11th at 2:00 pm, at the First Presbyteri­an Church in Frankfort, Kentucky.
