City declares March 28 Maddie Lanzel Day
ST. MARYS - The accolades continue for Maddie Lanzel, a St. Marys youngster who recently earned four state championship swimming titles.
To honor her accomplishments, St. Marys Mayor Lyle Garner recently declared March 28, 2022 as Maddie Lanzel Day in the City of St. Marys.
Maddie won the gold medal in the 100 yard individual medley, 100 yard butterfly, 100 yard freestyle, and 50 yard butterfly in the girls’ 1112 division at the YMCA Championship Meet at York YMCA Aquatic Club in York. The threeday meet took place from March 24-26.
Maddie is the daughter of Katie and Kevin Lanzel of St. Marys and is a student at St. Marys Catholic Middle
School. She is a member of the Ridgway YMCA Blue Tide swim team where she is coached by her mother Katie along with Liz Thorwart.
The proclamation states, “Winning one state title is an honor but four in one weekend is unbelievable.”
Maddie started swimming for the Ridgway YMCA Blue Tide swim team at five years old and was in love with the sport from the start. Maddie has had many accomplishments over the years but winning a state title is by far her biggest one.
“Hard work and the right mindset is what sets her apart from her competitors,” as was noted in the proclamation.
Maddie has an extreme drive for swimming and loves the sport. She practices swim yearround, but also plays other sports including, softball, volleyball and track and field. The proclamation also states, “The Blue Tide swim team is a family, and spend months on end together and it is because of all of the coaches, parents, and families that they were able to bring lasting memories like this to our community.”
