Lady Crusaders sweep Johnsonburg Ramettes 3-0
It may still be the regular season, but the atmosphere inside the gymnasium at Elk County Catholic High School on Thursday evening for the volleyball match between the Lady Crusaders and Johnsonburg Ramettes was reminiscent of a playoff contest, with strong showings by fans and both schools’ student sections.
The game was also a rematch of the final of this year’s Elk County Volleyball Tournament, which was won by the Lady Crusaders.
ECC prevailed again on Thursday, sweeping Johnsonburg 3-0 with set scores of 25-13, 2514, and 25-13.
“The girls played a great game tonight,” said ECC head coach Tricia Bauer. “It was another all around team effort. The girls really meshed and played with intensity from the first serve until the last point was scored.”
Bauer noted that her squad had a nearly perfect serving game in the match.
“The team combined for 11 aces and only two missed serves in the match,” Bauer said.
Bauer also credited a number of her players for their efforts in the game and helping the team come away with the win.
“Kiri Emmert did a great job spreading out our offense with 31 assists,” Bauer said. “Tori Newton had 11 kills, Madison Marzullo had 10 kills and two blocks, Reagan Bauer and Maddie Bierley had six kills each, with Bierley also chipping in two blocks. Lucy Klawuhn, Gabby Weisner, and Tessa Fledderman passed the ball exceptionally well tonight.”
Bauer added that she was “really happy” to come away with the win.
“We had a gameplan going into tonight’s game, and I was impressed with the girls’ execution of it,” Bauer said. “I have been pushing them harder in practice and asking more from them.”
The ECC junior varsity team also recorded a win in the preliminary contest, sweeping Johnsonburg 2-0 with set scores of 25-7 and 25-6.
Now 9-0 on the season, the Lady Crusaders return to action at home on Tuesday when they host Sheffield in a Senior Night matchup. The junior varsity match begins at 6 p.m. with the varsity match to follow.
