Flying Dutchmen fall to Chucks in season opener

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen were dealt a 7-2 setback by the Punxsutawn­ey Chucks in their season opener on Wednesday afternoon. The two squads faced off in Punxsutawn­ey for the matchup.

Charlie Coudriet, Ben Paul, and Carter Redmond all spent time on the mound for the Dutchmen. Coudriet started the game and worked the first three innings, giving up two hits and walking two. Paul took over for two innings, giving up four hits, walking one, and striking out two. Redmond worked the final inning, giving up two hits and walking two.

Jake Sikora and Nevin Day split time on the mound for the Chucks. Sikora worked the first three and two thirds innings, walking three and striking out five while giving up zero hits. Day worked the final three and one third innings, giving up three hits – all singles – while also striking out three.

Logan Mosier, Carter Price, and Paul each recorded one hit for the Dutchmen.

Batters for St. Marys went down in order in the top of the opening inning, and then the Chucks left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first.

Batters for both teams went down in order in the second, and then the Dutchmen got their first base runner of the day as Dan Schutz drew a walk to lead off the top of the third. However, a pair of strikeouts and a groundout left him stranded.

Punxsutawn­ey got on the board in the bottom of the inning as back-to-back errors gave the team a pair of base runners with no outs. A one-out lineout and a two-out double scored the Chucks’ first two runs, giving the team a 2-0 lead.

St. Marys stranded a pair of runners in the top of the fourth as Moser drew a oneout walk and Coudriet drew a two-out walk.

After that, neither team put a runner on base until the bottom of the fifth when Justin Miller led off with a single for the Chucks and then scored on a single by Zach Dinger to make the score 3-0. A single by Peyton Hetrick scored Dinger, making Punxsy’s lead 4-0, and then a one-out double by Carter Savage scored Hetrick to make it 5-0.

The Dutchmen got on the board in the top of the sixth as Mosier and Price hit back-toback singles with two outs. A single by Coudriet scored Mosier, putting St. Marys on the board trailing 5-1.

Punxsy responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to increase their lead to 7-1.

St. Marys scored their final run in the top of the seventh as Schutz reached base on an error and then scored on a wild pitch with Tysen Beimel at bat and two outs. The run made the final score 7-2 in Punxsutawn­ey’s favor.

The next game for the Dutchmen is scheduled for Wednesday, March 29 on the road against Warren at 4:30 p.m.
