Dutch junior varsity team brings home win over Brockway
The St. Marys Area junior varsity Dutch basketball team opened their 2023-2024 season with a 49-23 road win over Brockway on Tuesday evening.
Two players were in double digits for the Dutchmen, with Braeden Chicola leading the team with 17 points and Tysen Beimel putting up 13.
Caine Brubaker was the leading scorer for Brockway with eight points.
St. Marys Area outscored Brockway 13-5 in the opening quarter. Beimel led the way with seven points on a three and a pair of twos, Chicola had four points on a pair of twos, and Drew Schutz added a field goal. Brubaker hit a three for Brockway, and Logan Faith made a field goal.
St. Marys used an 8-6 advantage in the second quarter to take a 21-11 halftime lead.
Chicola led the Dutchmen with four points in the quarter on a field goal and a pair of foul shots. Beimel went two-for-four from the foul line, and Alex Mertz made a bucket. Kyle Kennedy hit a three for the Rovers, and Brubaker made a field goal and went one-for-three from the foul line.
St. Marys Area scored 14 points in the third while limiting Brockway
to four, extending their lead to 35-15.
Mertz and Devlin Caskey each scored five points for St. Marys Area in the frame, and Beimel and Chicola each made a field goal. Brubaker made a bucket for Brockway and Kennedy went two-fortwo from the foul line.
In the final quarter, St. Marys Area outscored Brockway 14-8 to leave with the 49-23 win.
Chicola scored seven points on a pair of twos and a three-point play, Cooper Regulski hit a three, Mertz made a field goal, and Beimel went two-for-four from the foul line. Hunter Ho made a pair of twos for Brockway and Zayden Faith and Logan Faith each added a bucket.
With the win, the Dutchmen are 1-0 on the season.
