Dutchmen defeat Brockway 57-23 in opener

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen opened their 2023-2024 season on the road on Tuesday evening, bringing home a big 57-23 win over the Brockway Rovers.

The Flying Dutchmen had three players in double figures in the game. Ben Paul led the team with 15 points, Anthony Nedzinski was two back with 13, and Quinn Gavazzi finished with 12.

The leading scorer for Brockway was Caleb Daugherty with 10 points.

The Dutchmen came out of the gate strong, putting 19 points on the board in the opening quarter while holding the Rovers to 10.

Anthony Nedzinski led St. Marys in the quarter with six points on a trio of twos. Gavazzi scored five points on a three and a two, Paul went three-for-four from the foul line, Louis Nedzinski hit a three, and Matthew Davis made a field goal. Daugherty scored five points for the Rovers on a two and a three, Bradey Hughes made a bucket and went one-for-two from the foul line, and Aiden Wilcox added a field goal.

St. Marys outscored Brockway 17-6 in the second quarter to take a 36-16 halftime lead.

Paul put six points on the board for the Dutchmen on a three, a two, and a one-fortwo showing from the foul line. Gavazzi hit a three and made a pair of foul shots, and Anthony Nedzinski, Tysen Beimel, and Devlin Caskey each made a bucket. Andrew Brubaker and Aiden Patton each made a field goal for the Rovers, and Daugherty went two-for-four from the foul line.

The Dutchmen scored 20 points in the third quarter while the Rovers had 11, putting St. Marys up 56-27.

Paul scored six points for the Dutch on a trio of twos, Anthony Nedzinski converted a three-point play and also had a field goal, Davis hit a three and a two, and Gavazzi and Louis Nedzinski each added a bucket. Hughes scored four points for Brockway on a pair of twos, Daugherty hit a three, Brubaker went two-for-four from the foul line, and Caine Brubaker made a field goal.

Each team scored one point in the fourth quarter, with Davis going one-for-two from the foul line for the Dutch and Aiden Wilcox going one-for-two from the line for the Rovers.

The game ended with St. Marys Area bringing home the 5728 win.

Now 1-0 on the season, the Dutchmen are scheduled to open their home campaign tonight against Cameron County. The junior varsity game begins at 6 p.m. with the varsity contest to follow.
