Following a successful season last year, the St. Marys Area High School competition cheerleading squad is excited to be back on the mat looking to put together an even better campaign in 2023-2024.

Jennifer Bish is in her 10th season as head coach of the team, and she shared that she is excited to see what this team brings to the table once they hit the mat.

“We had a great season last year, leaving some big shoes to fill,” Bish said. “My hope for this year is the veterans help guide rookies throughout the season to live up to their fullest potential.”

Members of this year’s team are Ava Logue, Hailey Weidow, Abagail Vogt, Madison Vogt, Mackenzie VanAlstine, Maddie Mancuso, Emily Dippold, Keri Vogt, Miranda Kohlenberg, Teyla Woodward, Rhianna Penfield, Alexis Yocum, and Taylor VanAlstine.

“The team is a mix between young and old,” Bish said. “There have been a few challenges thrown their way, but so far they’ve been resilient while keeping their goal in direct sight.”

Bish remarked that the team is looking forward to competing and having fun doing what they love.

“I hope to see this team surpass the goals they have set for themselves, which they are absolutely capable of doing,” Bish said. “It’s their confidence that may hold them back, but ultimately they have it in them.”

As for the squad’s biggest strengths, Bish shared that they all have heart and love for the sport of competitive cheer.

“Once they can translate that to their energy on the mat, they’re golden,” Bish said.

Confidence will be one of their biggest challenges.

“Being a younger team, we have seen the struggle to adapt to the varsity level, but they are on the right track,” Bish said. “I believe once they get rolling, it will all fall into place.”

Bish encouraged fans to come watch the team in action this season.

“There are many people that don’t understand competitive cheer or what these girls do,” Bish said. “It’s hard work, and they put in months to showcase a routine that’s two minutes and 30 seconds. Just as any other sport, I would encourage everyone to attend a local competition and support these athletes as they support all other athletes/ sports programs.”

Assisting Bish this season are Julie Lang and Carli Meeker.
