The Elk County Catholic and Kane girls’ basketball teams faced off at Elk County Catholic High School on Monday evening in a rescheduled matchup after their originally scheduled game was postponed due to inclement winter weather last week. While the game was close in the first quarter, the Lady Crusaders quickly pulled away after that for a big 54-18 win.

Kane scored 10 points in the opening frame but only put eight more on the board the rest of the game.

Emily Mourer led all scorers with 14 points for the Lady Crusaders. Lucy Klawuhn and Tori Newton also finished in double figures with 10 each.

Maya Smith was the leading scorer for Kane with eight points.

ECC had several opportunities to score the opening points of the game but could not get any shots to fall. Instead, it was the Lady Wolves who made the opening bucket of the night, with Isabella Saf putting the ball in the hoop for Kane to give the Lady Wolves an early lead.

The Lady Crusaders got on the board on a bucket by Mourer with 5:56 still to play in the frame, and then Mourer made a pair of foul shots 30 seconds later to give ECC a 4-2 lead. Elk Catholic would lead the rest of the way, but Kane would keep things fairly close until the end of the frame.

Sydney Alexander and Kane’s Kylie Iak traded twos, and then ECC went on an eightpoint run on buckets by Tori Newton, Mourier, Klawuhn, and Alexander to take a 10-point lead, 10-4. Kane answered right back with a six-point run on foul shots by Alexa Olmstead and a pair of buckets by Smith to make it 14-10 with 40 seconds to go. Tori Newton put two more points on the board for ECC with 18 seconds to go, ending the quarter with the Lady Crusaders up by six, 16-10.

ECC opened the second quarter with an 11-point run.

Mourer had a shot at a three-point play with 6:35 left in the half but missed the foul shot. Tori Newton and Sami Straub each made a bucket, Klawuhn hit a three, and then Payton Newton ended the run with two points with 3:10 to go.

Kane’s only point of the frame came on a foul shot by Hailey Hillman with 42.1 seconds left in the half.

The teams headed into the break with ECC leading by 16, 2711.

Straub opened the second half scoring with two points for ECC, and then Tori Newton and Smith traded foul shots, with each going two-for-two on trips to the line. ECC followed that up with a sevenpoint run, with Mourer, Klawuhn, and Straub each making a bucket and Alexander going one-for-two from the line. The Lady Crusaders led 38-13 with 3:50 remaining in the third quarter.

The teams traded twos and then one-fortwo trips to the foul line in the final 3:01 of the quarter, with the Lady Crusaders taking a 4116 lead into the fourth.

ECC opened the fourth quarter with an eight-point run. Mourer made the first two buckets, and then Tori Newton kicked in a running clock as she scored two points to put ECC up by 31, 4-16. Mya Pistner scored two points to end the run.

Kane’s only points of the frame came on a bucket by Smith with 2:21 to go.

A three by Klawuhn and a two by Gina Geci ended the scoring for the night, with ECC recording the 54-18 victory.
