District 9 basketball playoff brackets released

District 9 released the brackets for its upcoming girls’ and boys’ basketball playoffs on Thursday evening, and all four local teams will be in action next week beginning their quests for their respective D9 titles.

1A girls

Ten teams will be in action in the D9 1A girls’ bracket, with ECC entering as the top seed.

Action gets underway on Tuesday with a pair of opening round games. Eighth seeded Otto-Eldred will take on ninth seeded Austin, and seventh seeded Oswayo Valley will face 10th seeded Northern Potter.

The quarterfin­als will be played on Thursday at 7 p.m., with ECC facing the Otto/Austin winner and fourth seeded North Clarion taking on fifth seeded Clarion. The winners of both of those games will meet in the semifinals on Wednesday, Feb. 28

In the bottom half of the bracket, second seeded Ridgway will take on the Oswayo/ NoPo winner in the quarterfin­als and third seeded DCC will face sixth seeded Port Allegany.

The D9 1A girls’ championsh­ip game will be played on Saturday, March 2 at Penn West Clarion. A total of five teams will advance to the state playoffs.

2A girls

Three teams will be vying for the D9 2A girls’ title, with the top two advancing to the state tournament.

Second seeded Moniteau will take on third seeded Couderspor­t at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28 in Brockway. The winner will face top seeded Redbank Valley in the D9 2A girls’ championsh­ip game at Penn West Clarion on Saturday, March 2.

3A girls

The 3A girls’ bracket will feature teams from Districts 9, 8, and 5.

On Tuesday, Feb. 20, D9 second seed Brookville will take on D9 third seed Kane at 7 p.m. at Brockway High School. The winner will advance to face D9 top seed Karns City at 6 p.m. on Feb. 22 at Penn

West Clarion.

In the bottom half of the bracket, the top two teams from District 8 will face each other in the opening round, as will the top two teams from District 5. The winners of those games will then face off.

The District 5/8 champion will play the District 9 champion on Friday, March 1 at 6 p.m. at Penn West Clarion. The top two teams will advance to the state tournament.

4A girls

Three teams will be vying for the D9 4A girls’ championsh­ip.

Punxsutawn­ey is the top seed and has a bye to the title game.

Second seeded St. Marys Area will face third seeded Clearfield at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22 at DuBois Area High School. The winner will take on Punxsy in the D9 4A girls’ championsh­ip game on Saturday, March 2 at Penn West Clarion. The D9 champion will advance to the state tournament.

1A boys

Seven teams will be in action in the D9 1A boys’ bracket, with ECC entering as the top seed with a bye to the semifinals.

Quarterfin­al games will be played on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. Fourth seeded Cameron County will take on fifth seeded Union, second seeded Johnsonbur­g will face seventh seeded Northern Potter, and third seeded Clarion will play sixth seeded DCC.

In the semifinals on Tuesday, Feb. 27, ECC will face the Cameron County/Union winner, and the Johnsonbur­g/ NoPo and Clarion/DCC winners will play in the other semifinal.

The D9 1A boys’ championsh­ip game will be played on Saturday, March 2 at Penn West Clarion. The top five teams will advance to the state tournament.

2A boys

Nine teams will be vying for the D9 2A boys’ title.

There will be one opening round game, with eighth seeded Couderspor­t facing ninth seeded Curwensvil­le at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20. The winner will face top seeded Redbank Valley in the quarterfin­als on Friday,

Feb. 23 at 7 p.m.

In Friday’s other quarterfin­al games, fourth seeded ClarionLim­estone will face fifth seeded Ridgway, with the winner playing the Redbank/Coudy/Curwensvil­le winner in the semifinals on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at Penn West Clarion at 7:30 p.m. Additional­ly, second seeded Otto-Eldred will take on seventh seeded Port Allegany and third seeded Karns City will face sixth seeded Cranberry. The winners of both games will meet in the other semifinal on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. at Penn West Clarion.

The D9 2A boys’ title game will be played on Saturday, March 2 at Penn West Clarion. The top three teams will advance to the state tournament.

3A boys

Teams from Districts 9, 5, and 8 will be in action in the 3A boys’ bracket.

District 9 top seed Brookville will face District 9 second seed Moniteau on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Penn West Clarion.

In other games, the District 8 top seed and second seed will face off, and District 5 top seed Chestnut Ridge will play District 5 second seed Bedford at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at Chestnut Ridge High School. The D8 and D5 champions will then play each other, with the winner taking on the District 9 champion on Friday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. at Penn West Clarion. The top two teams will advance to the state tournament.

4A boys

Four teams will be competing for the D9 4A boys’ title.

Semifinal games are scheduled to be played on Friday, Feb. 23 at DuBois Area High School, with top seeded Punxsutawn­ey playing fourth seeded Clearfield at 6 p.m. and second seeded St. Marys Area taking on third seeded Bradford at 7:30 p.m.

The semifinal winners will face off in the D9 4A boys’ championsh­ip game on Saturday, March 2 at Penn West Clarion. The D9 champion will advance to the state tournament.
