Dutch baseball team rallies to defeat DuBois Area

The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen baseball team trailed DuBois 9-0 after the first two innings of Monday’s game in DuBois, but the Dutch started to chip away at the deficit, scoring two runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, one in the sixth, and then six in the seventh to come from behind to bring home a 13-12 victory.

Four pitchers saw action on the mound for the Dutchmen. Cameron Coudriet started the game and worked the first two innings, giving up seven hits, walking three, and striking out two. Carter Redmond took over for the next three innings, giving up one hit, walking three, and striking out five. Louis Nedzinski worked the next one and one third innings, giving up three hits and striking out one. Ben Paul worked the final two thirds of an inning, striking out one.

DuBois Area used five pitchers in the game. Hunter Allman started on the mound and worked the first three and two thirds innings, giving up five hits, walking three, and striking out three. Brock Smith worked the next one and one third innings, giving up two hits, walking one, and striking out one. Danny Dixon pitched one and one third innings, giving up one hit, walking three, and striking out two. Davey Aughenbaug­h took over on the mound and walked three without recording an out. Ricky Clark worked the final two thirds of an inning, giving up two hits and striking out one.

St. Marys’ batters went down in order in the top of the first, and DuBois put their first four runs on the board in the home half of the inning.

Tyler Chamberlin led off by reaching base on an error, and then Boston Graham walked to join him. Following a strikeout, a single by Trey Wingard scored Chamberlin to put the Beavers on the board leading 1-0. Samson Deeb entered the game as a courtesy runner for Wingard, and both he and Graham scored on a triple by Kaden Clark. Kaden Clark scored on a groundout by Ricky Clark, making the score 4-0. Lucas Delaney drew a two-out walk, but another groundout left him stranded.

Redmond hit a twoout double for the Dutchmen in the top of the second but was left stranded.

A single by Talon Hodge, an error, and a single by Graham loaded the bases for the Beavers with no outs in the bottom of the second. Dixon walked, scoring Hodge and keeping the bases loaded. A single by Wingard scored both Chamberlin and Graham. Deeb once again entered the game to run for Wingard. He was out advancing to third on a single by Kaden Clark that also saw Dixon score. Following a groundout, a single by Delaney scored Clark, making the score 9-0 in favor of the Beavers as a strikeout ended the inning.

St. Marys started chipping away at the deficit in the top of the third. Mason Nicklas led off the inning with a single to center, and then Ben Reynolds walked with one out to join him on base. Tysen Beimel also walked, loading the bases, and then both Nicklas and Reynolds scored on a single to left by Lucas Bauer, making the score 9-2.

DuBois got one run back in the home half of the inning. With one out, Chamberlin was hit by a pitch, and then Graham walked to join him on base. Following another strikeout, a single by Wingard scored Chamberlin, giving the Beavers a 10-2 lead.

The Dutchmen staged a two-out rally in the top of the fourth to put another pair of runs on the board. Paul got things going by reaching base on an error, and then Nicklas singled. Cayden Vogt reached on an error, with Paul scoring on the play and Nicklas advancing to third. A single by Reynolds scored Nicklas, trimming DuBois’ lead to 10-4.

DuBois once again responded with a run in the home half of the inning. Ricky Clark drew a leadoff walk, but following a strikeout, he was erased at second as Aughenbaug­h hit into a fielder’s choice. Deeb reached on an error, and then Aughenbaug­h scored on a wild pitch with Tycen Roy at bat, making the score 11-4.

A single, an error, and another single loaded the bases for the Dutchmen with no outs in the top of the fifth. Paul drew a walk, scoring Coudriet and keeping the bases loaded. Nicklas then hit into a fielder’s choice which allowed Jackson Vollmer to score but also erased Paul at second. The runs cut the deficit to 11-6.

DuBois left a runner stranded in the bottom of the inning.

Bauer reached on an error with one out in the top of the sixth, and then Coudriet walked to join him on base. Vollmer hit into a fielder’s choice that allowed Bauer to score but also erased Coudriet at second, making the score 11-7.

The Beavers hit a pair of one-out singles in the bottom of the sixth, but a double play ended the inning.

Paul was issued a walk to lead off the top of the seventh, and he went on to score on a one-out single by Nedzinski to bring the Dutchmen back within three, 11-8.

Reynolds and Beimel drew back-to-back walks, loading the bases. Bauer also walked, scoring Nedzinski and keeping the bases loaded. Another walk, this time issued to Coudriet, scored Reynolds and left St. Marys trailing by one, 11-10. Vollmer singled, scoring Beimel to tie the game at 11all. However, Vollmer ended up out on the play for the second out. A double by Redmond scored both Bauer and Coudriet, giving the Dutchmen their first lead of the game, 13-11, as a strikeout brought DuBois back up to bat for the final time.

Chamberlin led off the bottom of the seventh with a single. He stole second with Graham at bat, and then a sacrifice bunt by Graham moved him to third. A sacrifice fly by Dixon scored Graham to make it 13-12, but a strikeout ended the game with the Dutchmen edging DuBois for the win.

St. Marys Area is scheduled to next be in action on Wednesday in a 4:30 p.m. game against the Bradford Owls.
