The Elk County Catholic Crusader tennis team took on the DuBois Area Beavers at Benzinger Park on Monday afternoon, with DuBois taking home a 6-1 win.

DuBois swept all four singles matches and won two out of the three doubles matches.

“Elk County Catholic met a good DuBois Area team at Benzinger Park to play a rescheduled tennis match,” said ECC head coach Michael Jeselnick. “The results were 6-1. I think this match was a lot closer than the score indicated.”

At first singles, DuBois’ Brohm Hemke defeated ECC’s Douglas MacDonald 6-0, 6-0. At second singles, the Beavers’ Jay Parekh won 6-1, 6-1 against ECC’s Bradyn Pistner.

At third singles, Kyan Peck gave DuBois another win as he defeated ECC’s William MacDonald 6-2, 5-7 (10-7).

“William MacDonald fought back in third singles to be slightly edged by DuBois netter Kyan Peck 2-6, 7-5 (7-10) in a third set tiebreak. William gave a fight to stay in the match. He got down in the third set tiebreak but again rallied to come up short,” Jeselnick said.

At fourth singles, Ben Gribik completed the sweep for the Beavers as he defeated

Crusader Frank Messineo 6-4, 6-0.

At first doubles, Hemke and Parekh teamed up to take on ECC’s Douglas MacDonald and Pistner, winning 8-1.

At second doubles, Peck and Gribik teamed up for an 8-6 win against ECC’s William MacDonald and Messineo.

“Frank Messineo and William MacDonald lost 6-8 to DuBois’ Kyan Peck and Ben Gribik in a close second doubles match,” Jeselnick said.

The Crusaders’ lone win came at third doubles as the duo of Noah Cherry and Julian Lanzel won 9-7 against DuBois’ Jacob Loomis and Landon Pawl.

“Julian Lanzel and Noah Cherry played well to win third doubles 9-7,” Jeselnick said.

Jeselnick noted that his team continues to show improvement.

“The team has improved since our first match,” Jeselnick said. “I recognized certain aspects in our doubles team strategy we need to improve upon. It’s just under halfway to district playoffs, and if we continue to work hard the team can develop their shot-making skills. In singles matches, we simply didn’t play as we are capable of. The bottom line score in the match wasn’t in our favor. My thoughts were the team is growing and will continue to improve as post district play nears. This is our hope anyway.”
