CGA wins a pair in softball

New London — The Coast Guard Academy softball team ranked 17th in Div. III, needed some dramatics to sweep Castleton State in Saturday’s nonleague doublehead­er.

The Bears (8-4) scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh in the opener to win 5-4 before a 17-0 win in the second game.

Hayley Feindel ( 7- 4) pitched a fourhitter to win the opener, allowing four runs with six strikeouts and three walks. Maddie Buchert and Jesse Richardson had RBI doubles and the final two runs scored when Castleton dropped a two- out flyball.

Stacia Sarwinski and Kaitlin Ward hit three-run homer in the second game for Coast Guard. Catherine Walker (1-0) pitched a three- hitter with four strikeouts and four walks for the win. Shannon Jipner hit a three-run homer in the first game for Castleton (0-8). In other games:

Former Fitch star Brittany Duclos tripled and homered as Uconn went 1-1, beating Maine 8-2 and losing to Hofstra 8-2. Duclos scored three runs and Waterford’s Jen Ward stole a base in each game for Uconn (5-9).

College baseball

Derek Petty pitched a six- hitter as Coast Guard beat Clark 2- 1 in the first game of a NEWMAC doublehead­er. Clark won the second game 8-1.

Petty ( 1- 1) allowed an unearned run, struck out eight and walked two. Ed Sella and Tyler Babkiewich drove in runs for Coast Guard (6-6, 2-1) in the opener and Babkiewich had a sacrifice fly in the second game. Andrew Leblanc pitched a nine-hitter with 12 strikeouts in the second game for Clark (2-11, 1-2).

Uconn lost its third straight, falling to Coast Carolina 6-2. L.J. Mazzilli homered and scored twice and Old Lyme’s Ryna Fuller tripled for Uconn (6-10).

H.S. swimming

Fitch’schristian­bergandeas­tlyme’s 200-yard freestyle relay team each placed sixth during the State Open meet at Yale University in New Haven. Berg finished the 100 backstroke in a time of 52.90 seconds for the Falcons, who placed 17th in the team standings with 99 points while Adam Opsahl, Eric Stirtan, Clayton Otter and Sam Magna finished in 1:29.53 for the Vikings, who placed 20th with 86 points.

Fairfield Prep edged Brookfield 412-407 for the team title.

Men’s lacrosse

Middlebury scored the last eight goals of the game, lifting the Panthers to a 12-6 win over Connecticu­t College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Andrew Freedman scored twice and J.R. Hartgers had a goal and an assist for Conn (0-3, 0-3). Mike Giordano had two goals and two assists for Middlebury (2-1, 2-0).

Former Fitch standout Jordan Cook scored twice for Mitchell College, but the Mariners lost to Anna Maria 10-4 in a nonleague match. Adam Grillo and Aaron Feinberg, both from Waterford, also scored for Mitchell (0-4).

Women’s lacrosse

Emma Kramer scored five goals and had three assists to lead Middlebury to an 18-10 win over Conn College in a NESCAC game. Katelyn Driscoll had four goals, Lowell Abbott scored three and Bri Miller had two goals for Conn (0-3, 0-3). Margaret Souther had three goals for Middlebury (2-0, 2-0).

College swimming

Four Connecticu­t College swimmers have qualified for the NCAA Division III championsh­ips, which will be held in Indianapol­is from Wednesday through Saturday. Tim Walsh, Sam Gill, Patrick Mcginnis and Kirk Czelewicz from the men’s team will compete. Julia Pielock from the women’s team is an alternate.
