Mystic— Florence Ann Castaldi, 84, passed away peacefully in her sleep after a prolonged illness on Thursday, May 24, 2012.

Florence Ann Buonaguro was born on Feb. 12, 1928, in Brooklyn, N.Y. She graduated from Manhattanv­ille College with a biology major and was on the varsity basketball team. She settled in Stonington Borough shortly after her marriage to Frank Castaldi, who worked as a dentist there for many years until 1993. In 2008, she moved to Stoneridge in Mystic.

Ann was active as a librarian and as an assistant in her husband’s practice. She was an accomplish­ed piano player, and a Yankees fan. She enjoyed the beach, travel, and was a master at the New York Times crossword puzzle. Ann was known for her unique sense of humor and devotion to her children and grandchild­ren.

An only child, Ann is survived by her four children and their spouses, Michael and Dawn Castaldi of Pawcatuck, Frank and Catherine Castaldi of Wilton, Ann and Michael Callhan of Hope Valley, R.I., and Monica Castaldi of Burnsville, Minn. She has six grandchild­ren, Christophe­r and Stephen Castaldi, Peter, Matthew and Thomas Castaldi, and Paul Castaldi. Ann is also survived by her sister-in-law, Lydia Simone; and her niece, Stephanie Mahaney; and her five grandnephe­ws and -nieces, Stephen, Eliana, Sophia, Patrick Jr., and Gianpaulo Mahaney.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 26, at St. Mary Church, 95 Main St., Stonington. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Stonington. There are no calling hours.
