Eleanor Czarnowski

East Lyme— Eleanor (Waters) Czarnowski of East Lyme passed away on June 12, 2012.

She was born Oct. 4, 1925, in New London, the daughter of the late Eleanor and Charles Waters. Her father was an officer in the U.S. Navy. The family traveled extensivel­y throughout his career, living in Connecticu­t, California, Rhode Island, Illinois, China and the Philippine­s. She graduated from Williams Memorial Institute, New London in 1943 and went on to complete her education at St. Joseph College in West Hartford, where she received a nursing degree in 1947.

Eleanor’s nursing career began at St. Francis Hospital in West Hartford. She worked in the Veterans Hospital in Newington, where she was the operating room assistant supervisor.

She married William F. Czarnowski in 1954, and they raised six children together. Eleanor subsequent­ly worked over 12 years as a registered nurse at the Women’s Correction­al Institute in Niantic.

Eleanor is survived by her sons, Bill and wife Gigi of Freehold, N.J., Marc and wife Janis of Columbia, Brian and wife Karen of Galesville, Md., Peter and wife Jill of Kiowa, Colo., Paul and wife Lee of Lyme; and daughter Ellie of Old Lyme. She leaves grandchild­ren Jacob, Daniel, Christophe­r, Katherine, Kevin, Jennifer, Nicholas and Melissa; and a sister, Terry Mallon of Kingston, R.I.

In addition to her husband, she was predecease­d by her brothers, Charles and Robert.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Friday, June 15, at Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, at St. Matthias Church, Chesterfie­ld Road, East Lyme. A private burial will be held at St. Mary Cemetery in New London.

In lieu of flowers, Mass cards or donations to a charity may be made in her memory.
