EVANS CAPTURES STREET STOCK FEATURE, HIS FIRST AT SPEEDBOWL

-

Uncasville’s Phil Evans found Victory Lane for the first time, capturing the Street Stock feature on Saturday night as the Waterford Speedbowl hosted its annual Nostalgia Night.

The card, which included the regular NASCAR Whelen AllAmerican Series, was highlighted by exhibition events featuring vintage auto racing clubs, as well as a visit from the Northeastern Midget Association, which held its Shane Hammond Memorial event. Anthony Marvuglio won that race, while Avery Stoehr captured the NEMA Lite feature.

In addition to Evans’ first win, other Whelen weekly winners were Waterford’s Dillon Moltz (Late Model), Ian Brew (Mini Stock) and Kyle James (SK Modified).

Evans took the lead on lap 10 of the 25-lap feature before holding off the division’s all-time winning driver, Al Stone.

Brew rebounded from a hard crash during last Saturday’s race. Using a backup car, Brew took the lead from Chris Ivory on the opening lap and with stood a pair of cautions to win easily.

Moltz won his third Late Model race of the season. He took the lead from Old Lyme’s Jeff Smith following a lap 9 restart and gradually pulled away for an easy victory. Jason Berlin was second while Keith Rocco placed third.

James finished strong in the 35-lap SK Modified feature to earn his second win. He was in fourth place late, trailing Norwich’s Tom Abele Jr., when he began a battle with Jeff Gallup and Ledyard’s Tyler Chadwick.

With James threating to take second on the outside, contact from Chadwick saw Gallup spin around of of the second turn on lap 32. Both cars were forced to pick up at the rear of the field, enabling James to line up outside of Abele for the restart. With a strong car in the outside lane, James was able to stay alongside Abele and ultimately drive away from coming to the white flag.
