Mystic rally falls short

Groton— The Mystic Schooners couldn’t overcome an early 8- 0 deficit and lost to the New Bedford Bay Sox 9-7 in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game Saturday night at Fitch High School.

New Bedford built the 8-0 lead after scoring five in the top of the fourth inning. Brandon Cipolla (Holy Cross) hit a three-run homer for Mystic (20-19) in the seventh inning and the Schooners scored twice in the eighth to make the score 8-7 before New Bedford added a run in the ninth.

Alec Keller (Princeton) singled, doubled and scored twice, Tyler Boyd (Seton Hall) scored twice and former Montville standout Kyle Holland ( Dakota State) had two hits and two RBI.

Tre Gonzalez, another former Montville standout, pitched three strong innings in relief for the Schooners. Gonzalez ( Southern New Hampshire) allowed one hit and no runs with four strikeouts and no walks.

Tigers fall to Spinners

The Lowell Spinners scored a run on the top of the eighth inning, snapping a 1-1 tie and coming away with a 2-1 win over the Connecticu­t Tigers in a New York-Penn League game at Dodd Stadium. Pat Leyland’s home run in the fifth inning was the only scoring for the Tigers (16-23). Austin Green and Leyland had two hits each for Connecticu­t.

State Senior Legion

Southingto­n erupted for three runs in the first inning and went on to defeat New London, 4-1, in the opening round of the Connecticu­t American Legion Torrington Regional baseball tournament.

New London will play Enfield, an 8-3 loser to Zone VI champion Montville, in an eliminatio­n game today at 1 p. m., while Montville plays Southingto­n in the winners’ bracket final at 4 p.m.

The Torrington Regional winner will play the Stamford Regional winner in a best- of- three series starting Friday (in Stamford) for the state championsh­ip.

Shawn Nadeau and Gabby Diaz had two hits apiece for New London, which scored its only run in the second when Tristan Hurley singled and scored on a double by Zach Wolfgang.

State Junior Legion

Norwich was eliminated in the first round of the Connecticu­t Junior Legion Northern Sectionals, losing to Manchester 5-0. Norwich was limited to only four hits, including a double by Anthony DiPietro.

SEC 16-18 Babe Ruth

Waterford beat Ledyard 7- 4 in a winners’ bracket game. Dylan Konakowitz hit a two-run triple and later scored and Anthony Jordan had two hits and scored a run for Waterford. Zachary Willis had two hits and scored twice and Andrew August had two hits for Ledyard. In another winners’ bracket game TriCounty I beat Tri-County III 4-1.

Stewart leads U.S. women

UConn’s Breanna Stewart had 23 points and eight rebounds to lead the United States women’s basketball team to a 77-54 victory over Australia in the semifinals of the FIBA U19 World Championsh­ip in Klaipeda, Lithuania.

The American will play France, a 62-58 winner over Spain, in today’s gold medal game. Two other Huskies also played well for the United States. Morgan Tuck had nine points and seven rebounds while Moriah Jefferson had five rebounds and four assists.
