Waterford 14s win second straight in New England Babe Ruth tournament

Waterford Seniors and Mystic-groton Juniors post softball victories

Westfield, Mass. — Waterford clinched a spot in Monday’s semifinals of the New England Babe Ruth 14-year-old baseball tournament on Saturday with a 7-2 win over Warwick (R.I.).

Waterford, the District 6 and Connecticu­t champions, improved to 2- 0 in National Division pool play and secured a spot in the semifinals. If Waterford beats host Westfield (Mass.) today at 4, it will earn the No. 1 seed and player the American Division runnerup at 7 p.m. Monday night.

The championsh­ip game is Tuesday at 3 p.m., with the New England champion earning a spot in the Babe Ruth World Series starting Sunday, Aug. 14, in Moses Lake, Wash.

Mitchell Clapsadle pitched a complete game for Waterford, allowing only three hits, while Dan Castelpogg­i had three hits, including a double, while scoring three runs to lead the offense.

In addition, Alex Petchark had two hits and three RBI, Chase Speller had two hits and Ben Pickowitz and Mike Rocchetti each had doubles.

Sr. League (15-16) softball

Waterford began play in the Senior League East Regional by defeating Providence, 6- 1, in Worcester, Mass. Waterford is now 1- 0 in the New England Division of pool play and plays New Gloucester (Maine) today at 10 a.m.

Jill Jamon went the distance for Waterford, allowing only five hits while striking out eight. Margaret Reagan paced the offense with a triple, single and three RBI while Megan Elphick single, doubled and drove in a run and Brittany Campbell and Jodi Weiss each had hits.

Jr. League (13-14) softball

Mystic- Groton moved within a win of capturing the Connecticu­t Junior League (13-14) softball championsh­ip with a 4-3 victory of Black Rock of Bridgeport in game one of their-best-of three series. The District 10 champs can win the title with a victory today in Orange at 3 p.m.

Caroline Taber had a big day for Mystic-Groton. She was the winning pitcher, allowing only one hit while walking two and striking out 11, and also had two doubles and an RBI.

In addition, Brooke Arruda went 2- for- 3 with an RBI, Mackenzie Aldridge had an RBI double, Olivia Knotts had an RBI single and Jayden Delaporta had a double.

Little League (9-10) softball

Fairfield defeated Waterford South, 5-2, in the first game of the best- of- three series for Connecticu­t Little League ( 9- 10) softball championsh­ip. Game two is today at noon in Trumbull. Molly Quiles had two hits for Waterford South while Rachel Miller and Gina McKittrick each added hits and the District 10 champions used four pitchers— Rachel Nasser, Taylor Lee, Miller and McKittrick.
