Reid Gerritt

Hampton, N.H. — Reid Paul Gerritt, 61, of Hampton, N.H., formerly of Waterford and Middletown, passed away after an extended illness on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, with his loving wife by his side.

Reid was born in New London on May 7, 1953, the son of the late Stephen Gerritt and Fay (Ford) Gerritt. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Central Connecticut State University and his master’s degree in music education from Oklahoma City University. Reid taught instrumental music in the Madison School District. He founded the Connecticut Youth Jazz Workshop, where his ensembles achieved successes such as performances at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, New Orleans French Quarter Festival, New York’s Lincoln Center and the White House.

Reid was an avid adventurer who loved to plan vacations in the United States and abroad. He was a lover of the great outdoors and was known for his massive bonfires with every camping adventure. Reid loved political discourse. He entertained others with his keen wit and humor. Reid’s loyalty to his friends was unsurpassed.

In addition to his wife, Christine M. (Adams) Gerritt, Reid is survived by his son, Colin Gerritt and his fiancée, Leah Burnett, of Medford, Mass.; his brothers, Keith Gerritt and his wife, Laura, of Vermont, and Ford Gerritt and his wife, Katy, of Florida; his nieces, Tricia, Stacia and Leigh; and his nephew, Christopher.

A celebratory service will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on June 26, 2014, at the Elks Club, 44 Maynard St., Middletown. Relatives and friends are welcome.
