John Peterson

Groton — John S. Peterson, 72, of Nicholas Ave., Groton, passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London.

John was born on Nov. 9, 1942, in New London, the son of Emil and Inga Bertina (Nelson) Peterson. He had served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War era and then had gone on to a career as an electrical designer at Electric Boat in Groton, from which he retired.

John had a lifelong love of the water as well as boating.

His survivors include a son, Karl Peterson and his wife, Jaime, of Florida; his sister, Nancy Schmeelk and her husband, Charles, of Groton; and two nieces, Michele Baumer of Switzerland, and Kathryn McCoig of Bath, Maine. He also leaves his beloved cats, Matilda and Emily.

John had also been predeceased by a son, Eric Peterson and a niece, Lori McCoig.

Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, at Colonel Ledyard Cemetery in Groton with a celebration of his life to follow at 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Groton.
