DOLLAGA TAKES COMMAND OF SQUADRON 12

A new commodore assumed command of a Connecticut-based attack submarine squadron on Friday at a change-of-command ceremony at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton. Capt. Leonard Dollaga became the 39th commander for Submarine Development Squadron 12. Dollaga relieved Capt. Vernon Parks from the position, who will next report to the Joint Staff in Washington, D.C.

“It’s nice to have this ceremony for the guests, but it’s really for the sailors,” said Submarine Forces commander Vice Adm. Michael Connor. “It represents the continued recognition of who we are and what we truly value as a Navy — that absolute nature of accountability and responsibility in the art of leadership.”

Parks led Squadron 12 since May 2012 and was recognized for the operational success of the nine submarines assigned to that unit.

Dollaga, who is from Vallejo, Calif., graduated from the Naval Academy in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and holds a master’s degree in engineering management from George Washington University.

In his new position, he will oversee 45 naval personnel assigned to Squadron 12, eight attack submarines and a new Virginia-class attack submarine that is under construction. He will also lead a tactical analysis group that is responsible for improving submarine tactical doctrine.

Dollaga thanked Parks for handing over a “find institution at the leading edge of frontline operations and submarine force tactical development.”
