Remembering the Battle of Groton

On Sept. 6, 1781— 234 years ago — traitor Benedict Arnold led British forces in an attack on Fort Griswold in Groton.

Commemorating that day, the Avery Memorial Association and the Ebenezer Avery House will host reenactors on Sunday. Members of the Royal American Reformers will portray the British and Loyalist side of things. And what Battle of Groton Heights event would be worth its salt without someone taking on the role of Norwich native Benedict Arnold, and here that’s Kevin Titus.

During that battle, the Ebenezer Avery House transformed into a hospital of sorts for about 35 American soldiers. All told, 17 members of the Avery family died in the battle.

The public can tour the Ebenezer Avery House from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday aswell.

And, for some sleight-of-hand, Colonial American magician Joseph Potter will confound and entertain.

The Battle of Fort Griswold will be memorialized again on Sept. 13 when the Avery-Copp house hosts its annual Groton History Day. That event will feature a soldier’s encampment and a musket-firing demonstration; arti- sans demonstrating Colonial crafts; activities and games for youngsters; and tours of the Avery-Copp House.
