Stecher leads Valley/OL football to a 27-13 win

Old Saybrook — Dan Stecher rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns, leading Valley Regional/Old Lyme to a 27-13 win over Old Saybrook/Westbrook in a Pequot League South Division football game on Saturday.

Stecher, who ran the ball 25 times, had a 13-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and a 3-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter.

Matt Sapere was 12-for-21 with 161 yards with a pair of touchdown passes and two intercepti­ons for Valley/Old Lyme (4-4, 2-2). He threw a 22-yard TD pass to Garrett Burdick in the second quarter and a 30-yard TD pass for Jared Roche in the third quarter.

Burdick and Roche each had 42 yards in receptions and Stecher caught three passes for 31 yards. Chase Cook had two touchdown runs for the Rams (5-3, 2-2).

Men's soccer

• No. 6 Bowdoin scored a pair of first-half goals and held on to beat No. 4 Connecticu­t College in the semifinals of the New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament. Conn (10-5-2) outshot Bowdoin, 7-4.

• No. 3 UConn advanced to the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference tournament with a 4-0 win over No. 6 Temple. Abdou Thiam scored twice and Kwame Awuah and Moustapha Samb had two assists each for the Huskies (8-5-5), who play at No. 2 South Florida on Friday. Simen Olafsen and DeAndrae Brown had goals and Scott Levene made four saves for UConn.

Men's cross country

• Connecticu­t College finished 11th in the 40-team field at the ECAC Championsh­ip, with Coast Guard finishing 19th. Conn's Raymond Rich-Fiondella was 55th in a time of 28:07 and Coast Guard's top finisher was Alex Kearney, who was 68th in 28:24. Conn's Dan Gossels also made the top 60, finishing 59th in 28:13.

Women's cross country

• Connecticu­t College finished 10th and Coast Guard was 11th in the 46-team field at the ECAC Championsh­ip. Coast Guard's Bonny Turnage was 39th with a time of 24:34 and teammate Andrea Barrameda was 55th in 24:54. For Conn, Eva Brydson was 46th in 24:40 and Kelsey McGinnis was 50th in 24:45.

H.S. cross country

• Will Jarrett and Mary Madaus of Williams School had fourth-place finishes at the SENE Championsh­ip on Friday. Jarrett (18:04) led the boys' team to a fourth-place finish and Madaus (20:55) led the girls' team to a fourth-place finish. Also making the top 25 in the girls' race were Grace Cassineri (16th, 23:05), Hattie Grant (17th, 23:14), Sarah Billis (21st, 25:31) and Grace Burleson (23rd, 25:37). Cracking the top 25 in the boys' race were Colin Madaus (18th, 19:36), Colin Kronholm (20th, 20:35) and Hartmut Doerwaldt (21st, 20:37).

Men's hockey

• UConn lost to Massachuse­tts in a Hockey East game, 5-3. Joseph Masonius and Max Letunov had a goal and an assist each and Evan Richardson scored a goal for UConn (3-5, 1-4).
