Fitch softball perfect in regular season again

Groton — Caroline Taber pitched a two-hitter with 17 strikeouts and hit two doubles and scored twice as the top-ranked Fitch softball team beat East Granby on Monday, 7-0, to finish the regular season unbeaten for the third year in a row.

Jayden Delaporta went 3-for-4, including two doubles, with two runs for the Falcons (20-0), who have won 66 consecutive regular-season games with their last in-season loss to East Lyme (1-0) on May 2, 2013. They've played in the past two CIAC Class L finals, winning in 2014, and will be the top seed in the Eastern Connecticut Conference tournament. They play No. 8 Plainfield in today's quarterfinals at Griswold (1:45 p.m.)

The other quarterfinal matchups are No. 2 Norwich Free Academy vs. No. 7 Wheeler (11 a.m.), No. 4 Stonington vs. No. 5 East Lyme (4:30 p.m.), and No. 3 Waterford vs. No. 6 Griswold (7:15 p.m.) East Granby is 16-4. In other games: • Chloe Hespler pitched a no-hitter as Ledyard ended its regular season with a 14-0 nonleague win over Old Saybrook. Hespler struck out 11 and allowed just one baserunner when she walked Hannah LeMire in the fifth. Madison Sanborn led the offense for the Colonels (9-11) with two hits, including a solo home run, while scoring three runs and Olivia Satti added two runs and two runs.

• Mackenzie Merriman hit a tworun single as Waterford scored all of its runs in the top of the sixth inning and beat East Lyme, 4-2. Sara Buscetto and Claire Hurley both had two hits and a run for Waterford (146) and Jill Sykora and Shea Spellman both scored. Nicole Bowen had two hits, including an RBI single, for the Vikings (15-5) and Isabel Siciliano added an RBI single. Alex Chambers and Mikaela Lopriore both scored, too.

• Stonington finished its regular season with a 17-0, five-inning victory over St. Bernard. Abby Blanchard went 3-for-3, scored a run and recorded the 100th hit of her career for the Bears (16-4), while Jess Connor added an RBI double and Trinity Lennon pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts. The Saints are 2-16.

• New London scored four runs in the sixth inning to edge Grasso Tech, 8-6, in a nonleague game. Jocelyn Cooper had three hits, Bria Fielding two and Naralee Suarez a double for the Whalers (3-16), while Amber Maher had four hits for the Eagles (9-10), Tabitha Ford added a single and triple, and Sophia Green had a triple.

• Daria Stifel went 5-for-5 to power second-seeded Norwich Tech past No. 7 Hartford University/Classical, 18-8, in a Constitution State Conference tournament quarterfinal. Abbey Pater had three hits, three RBI and scored four runs while Vanessa Gumbs and Madison Bodley each added three hits for the Warriors, who'll host No. 3 Platt Tech at 3:45 p.m. today in the semifinals.

Boys' lacrosse

• Matt Scahill scored five goals as Ledyard rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to defeat Montville, 8-4, in the ECC Small Division. Shane Fors added two goals for the Colonels (313, 3-7) while Tyler Price and Dane Concascia scored two goals apiece for the Indians (9-7, 5-5).

Boys' golf

• Jack Sullivan shot a 39 to earn medalist honors and lift NFA to a 5.5-1.5 victory over Stonington in a nonleague match gat Elmridge Golf Course. Noah Straub added a 40 for the Wildcats (11-2-1), halving his match with the Bears' Jack Glenn. Tyler Snelgrove also won for Stonington (14-2) while Sullivan, Sean Gilot and Jack Wood won matches for NFA.

• Medalist Mason Swaney shot a 40, leading Old Lyme past Waterford and St. Bernard at Black Hall Club in Old Lyme. The Wildcats finished with a 165, the Lancers had 188, and the Saints 214. Matt McCarthy and Graham Aird each had a 41. Brett Collins had a 43 for Waterford.

• Sam Gaboury and Brian O'Sullivan shared medalist honors with a 42 in Montville's 7-0 win over Griswold at Norwich Golf Course. Chris Bouchard had a 44 for the Indians (7-6), who finished with 179 team medal points.

Girls' golf

• Hannah Slocum was the medalist, firing a 51, as Norwich Free Academy beat Bacon Academy, 231-266, in a match at Norwich Golf Course. NFA is 6-4-1.

College baseball

• Mitchell College junior Tyler Pina joined a list of 42 players from New England that earned all-region honors from D3baseball.com. A designated hitter, Pina was a second team pick after batting a career-high .372 with 26 RBI while playing in all 39 games for the Mariners, who qualified for the NCAA tournament for the third straight season. He led the team in doubles (12), runs scored (35), stolen bases (nine) and home runs (two).

College track

• Coast Guard Academy junior Caitlin Piker will be making her first appearance at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships beginning on Thursday at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. She has the 18th best throw in the javelin in Division III this season, posting a school-record distance of 135 feet, seven inches, at the New England Open Championships.
