Dorothy Szestowicki

Mystic — Dorothy M. (Gregory) Szestowicki, 87, of West Mystic, wife of the late Zigmont Szestowicki, died Monday, July 25, 2016, at home.

Born in East Haddam, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Antonia (Polivka) Gregory and resided in West Mystic for many years. She was a 1946 graduate of Nathan Hale High School in East Haddam, earning high honors, and was a graduate of the Morse Business College in Hartford.

Dorothy began her career at the Travelers Insurance Co., where she worked for several years and was part of the All Insurance Girls Softball League. When she relocated to Mystic in 1958, she and her husband owned and operated the Willow Point Marina in West Mystic. While operating the marina, she worked at Electric Boat as an executive secretary for over 20 years, retiring in 1995.

An active parishioner of St. Patrick Church in Mystic, Dorothy was a Eucharistic minister and a longtime member of the Daughters of Isabella. She was an accomplished and skilled seamstress, making the baptismal robes for all the babies who were baptized at the church for many years up until her health began to decline. Dorothy also gave her time as a faithful volunteer at the Mystic & Noank Library, including in the Children’s Room at the library and with the American Red Cross. Her other interests included reading, traveling to the Cape, solving crossword puzzles and living by the water. Her greatest joy, however, was spending time with her family, especially with her grandson, Jonathan.

Dorothy leaves a daughter, Deborah Allen, and her grandson, Jonathan Allen, both of Mystic; and a brother, William Gregory, and his wife, Rita, of Old Lyme.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 28, at the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick Church, 32 East Main St., Mystic. Burial will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery, Old Mystic.
