NFA grad Chasen honored by ABCA

Barry Chasen, a Norwich Free Academy graduate, is one of 10 men announced as the American Baseball Coaches Associatio­n 2017 Hall of Fame class.

Chasen will be inducted in a ceremony on Jan. 6, 2017 at Anaheim, Calif. Chasen coached the baseball team at Windsor from 1971-2004, winning 403 games and two state championsh­ips. Chasen also umpired for more than 50 years throughout the state and region. After graduating from Marietta College in 1969, he spent two years as an assistant coach at New London High School.

Chasen was inducted into the Norwich Sports Hall of Fame in 1996 and the Windsor Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.

New York-Penn League

• Two errors and a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth doomed the Connecticu­t Tigers on Tuesday night in a 6-3 loss to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers that sent Connecticu­t to its seventh straight loss.

Austin Athmann (2-for-4) put the Tigers on the board with a sacrifice fly in the second inning. In the third inning, Joey Havrilak added an RBI single, and one inning later, Danny Woodrow’s RBI single gave Connecticu­t a 3-0 lead.

The Tigers led, 3-2, going into the ninth, but fell apart. Bryan Garcia walked the first hitter and threw away a sacrifice bunt attempt toward second base. After a successful sac bunt moved the runners to second and third, a groundball off the glove of shortstop Daniel Pinero scored the tying run and kept two runners on. Silento Sayles then followed with a three-run homer to end the game.

SEC 16-18 Babe Ruth playoffs

• Johnny Staubley and Alec Donahue combined to pitch a three-hitter as Waterford Blue beat East Lyme Black, 18-2. The game ended on a mercy rule after five innings. Jake Huff tripled and drove in four runs, Noah Campbell had two hits and drove in three runs, Tom Feliciano scored four runs, Griffin Beaney scored three times and Donahue tripled for Waterford.

• Matt Patton had two hits and drove in three runs, leading Waterford Red to an 8-7 win over East Lyme Maroon. Michael Cohan had two hits for East Lyme.

CT LL baseball (10-11)

• Farmington eliminated Waterford, 5-4. Jackson Long homered, Evan Piotrowski tripled and Matty Uguccioni doubled for Waterford.

ECML

• Sawyer Gregory scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Panera Pirates rallied for a 5-4 win over Three Rivers. Clayton Shaw retired all 12 batters he faced in relief to get the win. Slater Gregory doubled twice and drove in two runs and Tyler Mikula drove in two runs for the Pirates. Tyler Wild homered and doubled and J.J. Crespo (two RBI) and Eli Rosario had two hits each for Three Rivers.

Sutera tournament (9-10)

• East Lyme beat New London 16-9 in the championsh­ip game on Monday. Connor Tukey had a triple and two singles, Alex Dreyfus singled and doubled, and Sebby DeCosta had two hits for East Lyme. Chris Cambi was the winning pitcher. Ralphy Sanchez had three hits, including a double, and Luca Muscarella tripled for New London.
