Groton — Douglas Wayne Britt, 74, of Groton, passed away on Saturday night, Aug. 20, 2016 at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London after a brief illness.

Doug was born on Nov. 5, 1941, in Bladenboro, N.C., the son of Roscoe and Verna Kissam Britt.

He was married to the former Leona April Stolba on June 18, 1966, in Middletown. The couple had just celebrated 50 years of marriage together.

Doug served in the U.S. Navy and then went on to a 33-year career at Pfizer in Groton, retiring in 1998 as foreman.

Mr. Britt was an active member of the Quaker Hill Rod and Gun Club and the NRA. He was an excellent skeet shooter, having competed in several world skeet championsh­ips. He also enjoyed hunting and lobstering.

Besides his loving wife, Doug is survived by three children and their spouses, Dwayne and Karen Britt of Voluntown, Tim Britt and his fiancée, Bobbi Barber of Groton, and Melinda and Jason Forde of Groton; two brothers, Maurice and Freddie; and five sisters, Melba, Betty, Annette, Joyce and Annis, all of North Carolina; five grandchild­ren, Emily, Cory and Nick Britt of Voluntown, and Kelsey and Brandon Forde of Groton; and Gypsy, Doug’s hunting dog.

His family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., with a Celebratio­n of his Life at 5 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, his family has requested that donations in his memory be directed to the Lawrence + Memorial Cancer Center or the Center for Hospice Care, 227 Dunham St. Norwich, CT 06360.
