Tracking the Bears

• A young Coast Guard Academy volleyball team is experienci­ng a growth spurt. The Bears went 3-0 last week, including sweeping rival Connecticu­t College, and won four of five overall to improve to 7-5. Freshman Angelou Dunton leads the team with 147 kills and ranks third in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference with 3.42 kills per set. Susan West, the only senior on the team, is second on the team in kills with 116.

• Junior Dana Rohde earned her third trip to the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Associatio­n Women’s National Championsh­ip by placing third at the New England Women’s Singlehand­ed Championsh­ip. The national event will take place Nov. 5-6 in Galveston, Texas.

• The men’s soccer team defense has allowed just four goals in eight games. But the Bears (5-2-1, 1-1) have lost two straight — 1-0 to Conn College and 2-0 to NEWMAC foe Clark. Senior Alex Lane is the top scorer with three goals and one assist. Coast Guard hosts Mitchell College on Wednesday.

• It’s a big upcoming weekend for Coast Guard, which hosts Homecoming festivitie­s. The women’s soccer team hosts Smith at 7 p.m. Friday. The men’s soccer team entertains MIT at 11 a.m. Saturday, followed by football hosting Maine Maritime at 1:30 p.m.

Camel highlights

• It’s been a case of rise and shine for the Conn College women’s soccer team. The 22nd-ranked Camels are rising to the occasion and shining in every game on their way to a 7-0 record. It’s the best start in coach Norm Riker’s six seasons. They also carry 3-0 New England Small College Athletic Conference record into Saturday’s showdown with top-ranked Williams College. Sophomore Alex Baltazar leads the conference in scoring with seven goals and 16 points while junior Michelle Medina is first in the assists with six. Goalie Bryanna Montalvo posted two shutouts last weekend in 3-0 wins over Hamilton and Colby.

• The sailing team captured the Salt Pond Invite, which was hosted by Rhode Island last weekend. The Camels finished with 48 points. Junior skipper Walt Florio, Erin Smith and Marion Lemay combined to place second in the A Division. Carter Pemberton, Katie Rodger and Jessica Hunnewell won the B Division.

Around the region

• Junior Cody Brown, a Norwich Free Academy graduate, is a starting offensive lineman for the Springfiel­d College football team. Two other former ECC players — Stonington’s Ryan Francis and Ledyard’s Bobby Bozym — also are on the roster. Bozym, a junior left guard, made his first start last week against WPI.

• Three ex-ECC players are making a contributi­on at the University of Hartford. Former Montville standout Jeff Tryon, a senior, has scored two goals for the men’s soccer team. Junior Melanie Spanos of Waterford has appeared in three games and Stefanie Szot, a sophomore reserve goalie out of Montville, has played in one game for the women’s soccer team.

• Gabi Hoops, a sophomore from Stonington, is enjoying a successful season as starting goalie for the WPI women’s soccer team. Hoops has posted four shutouts and a 0.45 goals against average in nine starts. WPI is 7-1-1 overall.

• At Eastern Connecticu­t, the field hockey is relying on three local players. East Lyme’s Paige Schneider, a senior midfielder, has three goals and an assist while senior Caroline Regan of East Lyme has one goal in eight starts and junior Tia LaFrance Boyce of Stonington has played in all eight games off the bench.

• Former Waterford tennis player Lauren Rahr is competing for Endicott College. Rahr is in her sophomore season, playing both singles and doubles. Rahr is a member of the Endicott Scholars Honors Program, earning recognitio­n last spring during National Student Athlete Day for “achieving excellence in academics and athletics while making significan­t contributi­ons to the community.”
