Novlette Brown

-

Waterford — Novlette May Brown, formerly of Camelot Drive, Bloomfield, died on Monday, Sept. 26, 2016, at Greentree Manor in Waterford.

The last of 10 children born to Emily and Augustus Moncrieffe, on Feb. 6, 1931, in St. Mary, Jamaica, West Indies, she is predeceased by her siblings, Icylda, Thomson, Ronald, Sarah, Astley, Ellen, Constantine, Alfred and Martha.

She was the loving and supportive aunt to many nieces and nephews in Jamaica, West Indies and the U. S., including Margery, Jackie, Stephen of N.Y., Erica “Marie” of Connecticut, John and Joan of Florida, Derrick of Jamaica; to cousins, Doreen of Maryland, Joyce of New York; and to lifelong friends, Faith, Lydia of Florida and Louise of New York. Her beloved nephew, Allan “Macky” of Enfield, died earlier this year.

Novlette graduated from Bethlehem Moravian College in Jamaica, West Indies, then taught elementary grades for many years. After immigrating to the U.S. and subsequently becoming a U.S. citizen, she lived and worked in New London, and from that base earned an associate’s degree from Mitchell College, followed by a bachelor’s degree in business from Western Connecticut State University. Following a job-related move to Hartford, Novlette relocated to Bloomfield, continuing her work as a bank manager, from which she retired over 10 years ago. She has been an active and highly regarded member of her church, Pentecostal Rescue Mission, in New London, and contributor to her community.

Novlette was infused with the virtues that seem to come naturally to those who are excellent mentors and teachers—insightfulness, patience, ability to motivate and caring, among others.

She loved her family and, in later decades, her church family became as important to her as her biological family, traveling each Sunday and at times during the week to attend services in New London. She worked to achieve the “Amazing Grace” alluded to in the hymn of the same name.

The family offers special thanks to Novlette’s caregivers at Greentree Manor and those at her prior residence, Alexandria Manor in Bloomfield.

A private, graveside service will be held on Friday, Sept. 30, 2016, at Cedar Grove Cemetery, with Pastor Nathaniel Scott officiating.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Lester Gee Funeral Home in New London.
