Montville girls edge Waterford 1-0

Marchini’s goal lifts Indians to key win in ECC Div.II soccer

Montville — Rachel Marchini scored off a corner kick in the 56th minute to break a scoreless tie and lift Montville to a 1-0 victory over Waterford in an Eastern Connecticu­t Conference Division II girls' soccer game on Saturday night.

The Indians (7-1-2, 4-1-1) are in second place in Division II, trailing only Woodstock Academy (4-0-1). Montville plays host to the Centaurs on Oct. 20.

Lauren Ross made eight saves in goal for Montville to earn the shutout while goalie Jordan Kovacs made three saves for the Lancers (4-4-3, 2-3-1). In other games: • Sam Narducci scored 3 minutes, 28 seconds into the game and Stonington went on to beat Bacon Academy 2-0 in an ECC Division II game. Lainnie Connor assisted on Narducci's goal and also set up the second goal.

Connor's free kick went to Narducci and ended up bouncing off the head of a Bacon player for an own goal. Hannah Lamb (six) and Connor combined for 10 saves for the Bears (4-4-2, 2-3-1).

• Old Lyme scored once in each half and beat Woodstock Academy 2-0 in a nonleague game.

Mya Johnson scored in the first half and Mary Bolles in the second half for the Wildcats. Caleigh O'Neil and Jenna Peduzzi had assists and Britney DeRoehn made 11 saves for Old Lyme (11-1-2).

• Stephanie Vetrano had a pair of goals and an assist, leading Ledyard to a 5-0 win over Wheeler.

Sarah Serbascewi­cz had a goal and an assist, Isabelle Mercer and Jenna Topalis had goals and Alison Van Volkenberg had an assist for Ledyard (3-8). Wheeler is 3-7.

• Emily Smith scored twice as St. Bernard beat Windham 3-0 in an ECC Division III game.

Kara Bassett had a goal and an assist and Mia Londregan and Lili Smith had assists for the Saints (8-1-2, 6-1-1).

Boys' cross country

• Williams School finished fourth in the five-team Avon Old Farms 5K. Will Jarrett was the top finisher for Williams, coming in fifth with a time of 18:42. Hartmut Doerwaldt of Williams was 18th in 19:50.

Volleyball

• RHAM beat Norwich Free Academy 25-16, 25-9, 25-16 in a nonleague match. Megan Goldstein had six kills and Emily Marker had six digs for NFA (7-3).
