Mitchell men ousted in opening round of NECC tournament

Boston — Nicholas Fenton had 30 points, 10 assists and four steals as fourth-seeded Wheelock beat No. 5 Mitchell College 97-86 in the first round of the New England Collegiate Conference men's basketball tournament on Tuesday night.

Anthony Williams added 27 points and 10 rebounds for Wheelock (1214).

Domenico Santago had 27 points and 16 rebounds for the Mariners, who finish 7-19, while Hasani Williams added 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Boys’ basketball

• Dev Ostrowski scored 19 points and East Lyme's offensive came alive in the second half to defeat Bacon Academy 58-46 in the regular-season finale for both schools. The Vikings (11-9) led 22-16 at the half and scored 36 points in the second half. Luke Leonard added 11 points for East Lyme while Paul Chasse scored 28 points for Bacon (12-8), including five 3-pointers.

• Aedan Using had 13 points and Quinn Romeo scored 12 as Old Lyme edged Creed 55-52 in the Shoreline Conference. Dan Marinelli had 10 points for Old Lyme (5-14). Tyrese Sheets scored 18 for the Howling Wolves.

College honors

• Coast Guard Academy junior Gill Gerton was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the third time in the last four weeks after leading the Bears to a pair of wins to close out the regular season. Gerton averaged 15.5 points and 10 rebounds per game (18 of her 20 rebounds were defensive boards) in the two games, which helped Coast Guard qualify for the NEWMAC tournament, while adding 12 assists, two blocks and five steals. The sixth-seeded Bears play at No. 3 WPI on Wednesday in the quarterfin­als. The teams split during the regular season.

• Coast Guard placed three of cadet-athletes on the NEWMAC Women's Swimming and Diving All-Academic team. Senior Rachel Seaman (operations research and computer analysis) was named to the team for the third straight season while senior Sarah Ritchie (management) and sophomore Brooke Harkrader (government) earned All-Academic honors for the first time. Honorees must have met the following criteria: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale after the 2015 fall semester, achieved second year academic status at her institutio­n, and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season.
