Laugh and a smile

- — Rick Koster

Is comedy, as Jim Gaffigan once told me — because we talk all the time — the only artistic discipline that’s basically a meritocracy? I think he might be right, although I suppose one variant might be that humor is subjective. I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure the same people who laugh hysterically at Gallagher aren’t memorizing Lewis Black bits.

In any event, the very funny Bonnie McFarlane performs at Comix in Mohegan Sun for shows on Thursday and Friday and two sets Saturday. A native of Canada, McFarlane has an earnest, laidback delivery and a deceptively warm smile. While not as graphically provocative as Margaret Cho or Sarah Silverman, she does work beautifully against any female stereotypes. One favorite: talking about how she can’t imagine life without her cell phone, McFarlane observes, “I love my daughter, too, but I wouldn’t freak out if she fell in the toilet.”

Along with her standup career and regular stints on the late-night talk show circuit, McFarlane does the “My Wife Hates Me” podcast with her husband, fellow comedian Rich Vos; is the author of a memoir called “You’re Better Than Me”; and wrote and directed the 2012 film “Women Aren’t Funny.” Bonnie McFarlane, 8 p.m. Thurs.-Sat. and 10 p.m. Sat., Comix, Mohegan Sun; $15-$30 Thurs. and late show Sat., $20-$45 Fri. and early show Sat.; (860) 862-7000.
