The Day

Dancing in the moonlight

- — Rick Koster

What a marvelous night for an homage! We’re talking about Friday at the Strange Brew Pub in Norwich when a typically excellent one-off group of area musicians will gather to recreate Van Morrison’s immortal “Moondance” album.

The presentation is the 21st in the club’s popular “Album Tribute” series. “Moondance” came out in 1970, a more commercial follow-up to Morrison’s superb but, at the time, underappreciated “Astral Weeks” record. Including such tunes as “And It Stoned Me,” “Into the Mystic,” “Crazy Love” and the title track, “Moondance” is a ridiculously infectious collection of songs celebrating the pagan delights of nature, music and love.

Channeling the vibes for this performance are singer Chuck Chesler, keyboardist Parker McQuenney, guitarist Jeff Bowen, bassist Josh Welch, flutist/saxophonist Joseph Meo, vocalist Christine Salazar, and percussionists Chris Gonsalves and club owner Jason Wallace. Van Morrison’s “Moondance,” Album Tribute Night, 9 p.m. Friday, Strange Brew Pub, 297 West Main, St., Norwich; free; (860) 886-7600.
