Twenty-seven local athletes are scheduled to take part in the twoday State Open wrestling tournament, which begins today at the Floyd Little Athletic Center.

Wrestling begins at 4:15 p.m. and will complete the first and second championsh­ip round, as well as the opening round of consolatio­n matches. Action resumes on Saturday with the championsh­ip quarterfin­als at 9 a.m., the championsh­ip semifinals at 12:30 p.m. and the championsh­ip finals at 5:45 p.m.

Fitch's Jarod Kosman, the Eastern Connecticu­t Conference and Class L champion at 106 pounds, is the only local No. 1 seed, and could face rival Logan Smith of Waterford in Saturday's final. Smith, who won the Class M title and lost to Kosman 5-1 in the ECC final, is seeded second.

The field also includes seven other local state class champions, including Ledyard's Bo Nguyen (Class S 120), Montville's Noah Caskey (Class S 126), Montville's Joel Morth (Class S 132), Montville's Sam Kury (Class S 145), Ledyard's Mike Sullivan (Class S 182), Fitch's Dakota Grover (Class L 195) and New London's Renelson Michel (Class L 220).

Also scheduled to compete (by school) are Ledyard's Joey Millbach (106), Tyler Miller (113), Gavin Williamson (145), Jake Millbach (160), Collin Crader (170), Dan Contino (220) and Richard Mullaney (285); Fitch's Austin Robertson (126); Montville's Ian Anderson (138), Emanuel Diaz (192), Dane Concascia (195) and Nick Tibbetts (220); New London's Jacob Commander (160), Luis Rodriguez-Veras (170), Xavier Alvarez (182) and Renel Michel (285); and St. Bernard/Norwich Tech's Alex Brito (220) and Roark Ryan (285).

H.S. football

• Quarterbac­k Melquann Gomez, who helped lead New London to a Class L playoff berth and a 9-2 season, announced via Twitter that he has accepted an offer to attend Division II American Internatio­nal College in Springfiel­d, Mass. Gomez, who also plays basketball for the Whalers, was a first-team Eastern Connecticu­t Conference Division I all-star and was named to The Day's All-Area team.

Boys' basketball

• Seniors Dean Palenski (15), Danny Marinell (11) and Graham Air (8) combined for 34 points in their final game as Old Lyme ended its season with a 66-52 victory over Hale-Ray in the Shoreline Conference. The Wildcats finish 6-14, 5-13.

H.S. swimming

• Lyman Nuttall and Brendan McCarty won two events each for Waterford as the Lancers beat New London 93-67 in the ECC regular season finale for both schools. Nuttall won the 200 individual medley relay (2:50.72) and the 100 butterfly (1:15.86) and McCarty won the 100 freestyle (1:09.43) and the 100 backstroke (1:17.06).

Jason Blain and Quinn Ryan also won events for Waterford (2-8, 2-8) and Clancy Susi, Sam Lanuza and Bryce Dorunda chipped in to help the Lancers win two relays. Tim Glavan won the 50 freestyle (31.44) and 100 breaststro­ke (1:26.35) for New London (0-10, 0-10), teammate Oliver Guijarro-Sines won the 200 freestyle and New London's Nichole Roman, SaraBeth Bouchard, Jazmine Silva and Moli Michel won the 400 freestyle relay.

Men's basketball

• Tyrel Martinez had 13 points and 14 rebounds, leading Avery Point to a 59-53 win over Gateway Community College in an NJCAA Region 21 game.

Mack Osias added nine points and nine rebounds for the Pointers (1014, 10-10).

Women's basketball

• Avery Point closed out it regular season with an 83-67 loss to Gateway CC. Taty LaFrance Boyce had 29 points, 10 rebounds and six steals, Meagan Bianchi had 21 points, six rebounds and four assists and Summer Mills had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Pointers (12-10, 8-5).

H.S. hockey

• The Eastern Eagles lost to Woodstock Academy on Wednesday, 6-1. Riley Jordan scored, Ryan Huta had an assist and Troy Moeller made 35 saves for the Eagles (4-15).
