Santiago leads Mitchell to victory

— Eddie Santiago pitched a two-hitter to lead Mitchell College to a 6-1 win over Newbury in a New England Collegiate Conference baseball game on Wednesday.

Santiago (2-1), the former New London standout, struck out 11 with no walks. Garet Griffin was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, Francis Prettitore singled, homered and drove in two runs and Mystic's Tristan Hurley doubled and scored twice for Mitchell (12-6, 2-1).

• Coast Guard's ninth-inning rally fell short in a 7-5 loss to Babson in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game. Coast Guard scored twice in the bottom of the ninth before the game ended on a double play. Zach Serna singled, homered, drove in two runs and scored twice and Timbo Duncan was 3-for-4 and scored twice for Coast Guard (6-11, 0-3).

• Ronnie Rossomando pitched five strong innings for the win as UConn beat Fairfield 6-1 in a nonleague game. Rossomondo allowed three hits and a run with five strikeouts and two walks. Conor Moriarty was 3-for-4 with three RBI for UConn (13-9).

Softball

• Reanna Clark had two hits, including a grand slam, with two runs as Mitchell handed Dean its first loss of the season, 8-6, in the second game of a doublehead­er. Danielle Autieri went 3-for4, including a two-run home run, and scored twice for Mitchell (3-6) and Waterford's Megan Elphick singled and scored twice.

Samantha Mulcahy went 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBI as Dean won the first game, 11-9. Elphick went 3-for-4, including a double and solo home run, with three RBI and two runs for Mitchell while Italia Krick went 2-for-3 with three runs. Suzanne Vachon also had two hits, including a solo home run, and scored.

Women's lacrosse

• Mitchell College picked up its first win of the season, beating Dean 20-6 in a nonleague game. Ashley Murtha had 10 goals and three assists and Kate McCormack scored eight goals for Mitchell (1-2). Madeline LeBeau of Quaker Hill scored for Dean (0-8).

• Former Fitch standout Daria McKenna scored four goals, including the 40th of her career, as Coast Guard beat Mass. Maritime 14-10 in a nonleague game. Abigail Bradford scored three goals, Anna McGoldrick and Carter Sanderson had two goals each and Niki Kirchner-Hope had a goal and an assist for Coast Guard (3-6).

Men's lacrosse

• Western Connecticu­t State led 12-2 at halftime and went on to beat Mitchell College 17-3 in a nonleague game. Groton's Ryan Reuling and Waterford's Jon Thomas scored for WCSU (3-3) and Mystic's Matt Sauchuk scored for Mitchell (1-5).

Men's tennis

• John Hu, Mike Melampy, Adam Bahney, Jack Phillips and Arthur Wicke all won at singles as Coast Guard won its first match of the spring semester, 7-2, over Merchant Marine.
