The Day

Take a page from their book

- — Kristina Dorsey

Even if you don’t cook, it’s fun to contemplate what you might whip up for the annual edible books festivals at Groton Public Library, the Public Library of New London and Ledyard’s Bill Library if you could.

Maybe a Reuben sandwich for “The Catcher in the Rye”? Or how about a piece of pie nestled into a boat-shaped dish for “Life of Pi”?

The folks who submit their creations for the annual events always dream up creative concepts, like the “The Lord of the Fries” take-off on “Lord of the Flies,” for instance, or like a piece of cake cleanly and expertly sliced out from the whole that echoes Shel Silverstein’s “The Missing Piece” at Groton Public Library. And there was the play on words at the Public Library of New London that was “20,000 Leeks Under the Sea.”

It’s all about designing some clever culinary work inspired by a book, whether it be a pun or a character reference or any other allusion.

The 11th annual Groton festival takes place Sunday, and it is sponsored by the Friends of the Bill Memorial Library, Friends of the Mystic & Noank Library and the Groton Public Library Circle of Friends. The festivals at New London and Ledyard’s Bill libraries are both on Saturday.

Visit the libraries’ websites for more details on submissions.
