CGA's Darius Adams wins NCAA Division III title in long jump
Geneva, Ohio — Coast Guard Academy's Darius Adams capped a tremendous junior season by winning a national title in the long jump during the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday at the University of Mount Union.
Adams won the title with a leap of 24 feet, 1.5 inches. Matt Fleming of Benedictine placed second with a leap of 23-10.75.
Adams, from Nassau, Bahamas, is the first Coast Guard athlete to win a national title in an individual sport since Christian Brindamour won the 50 freestyle at the 2014 NCAA Division Swimming and Diving Championships. He's also the first track athlete to earn All-America honors since Adam Scalesse paced third in the 110-meter high hurdles at the 2014 NCAA outdoor meet.
He broke the school record with a jump of 24-5.75 at the New England Open Championship earlier this month.
Adams played football for the first time at any level last fall and had a breakout season as a wide receiver for the Bears. He set single-season school records with 1,054 receiving yards and 13 touchdown receptions while tying the single-game record of three touchdowns in game (twice). He was named to the 2016 New England Football Writers Division II/III All-New England Team, was named the New England Football Conference Offensive Rookie of the Year and was a first team All-NEFC selection.
Also Thursday, Connecticut College senior Bella Franz ended her career by placing 19th in the 1,500-meter race in 4:42.05.
Franz set a program record by appearing in her seventh NCAA championship event between track and cross country.
Women's sailing
• Defending champion Coast Guard is in third place after the first day of the College Sailing Sperry Women's Nationals in Charleston, S.C. The Bears have 140 points after the first 10 races, with the final 10 scheduled for today.
Yale leads the team race with 98 points followed by Boston College with 111. In the A Division, Coast Guard's best finish was a second in the ninth race, while the Bears' B Division team won the ninth race.
Baseball
• Tyler Bielamowicz doubled and homered as second-seeded Houston advanced to the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference tournament with a 7-6 victory over No. 3 UConn in Clearwater, Fla. The Cougars (38-19) are just a win away from reaching its fourth straight AAC title while the Huskies (32-24) face Memphis in an elimination game on Friday at 11 a.m. Isaac Feldstein hit a threerun homer for the Huskies.
Men's lacrosse
• Conn College's Ben Parens and Alex Calabro were named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association All-American team. Parens, a junior, was named to the first team for the second straight year at the X position whle Calabro was named to the third team as a midfielder.
Parens, a first-team All-New England Small College Athletic Conference choice each of his first three seasons, had 254 faceoff wins this season and 127 ground balls. He is second on the Conn's career ground ball list with 355.
Calabro bounced back just eight months removed from a serious knee injury to score three goals, add five assists, 52 goal balls and 11 caused turnovers. He was also named to the All-NESCAC first team.
Calabro was also selected to play in the USILA North vs. South Senior AllStar Game on Friday at Providence College.
Men's basketball
• Conn College's Daniel Janel has been selected to play for the Maacabi USA Open men's basketball team in the 20th World Maccabiah Games from July 4-18 in Israel. The Games draw more than 10,000 Jewish athletes from 80 countries to participate in 43 sports.
The U.S. will be coached by Doug Gottlieb and includes current and former college stars.
Janel played three seasons for the Camels after transferring from Division II Adelphi and finished his career by averaging 11.5 points and 5.7 rebounds as a senior this winter.
