Westerly — Douglas Hopkins Peacock of Westerly, R.I., and formerly Groton Long Point, passed away Friday evening, June 9, at Yale New Haven Hospital. He was 78.

Doug was a devoted father to his two children, Linda and Jep. He was born at Hartford Hospital to his amazing parents, Shannon and Albert of West Hartford, who predeceased him. Doug grew up sailing every summer with his late sister, Andria, in Groton Long Point, where he eventually imbued his passion for boating to his children. He was a cherished captain to anyone who was fortunate enough to sail with him on his beloved Catalinas, First Draft and Second Draft. A proud member of the Mudhead Yacht Club of Mystic, he raced every chance he got. Doug loved sailing — anywhere from Long Island Sound to the far away points of the British Virgin Islands.

In his early adult life, he served in the U.S. Army and spent time in Germany during the Cold War. After his service, Doug had a long career teaching middle school science in Bloomfield. His passion for science often got him invited to make special appearances in his own children’s classrooms, performing eye-opening experiments to the students of Barkhamsted Elementary School. An avid hunter and sportsman, Doug was an instructor for the NRA and taught his children all about guns and marksmanship. He also was a singer and actor regularly involved in community theater, most often with the Pleasant Valley Players. Many of the shows in which he performed were instrumental in raising money for the restoration of the historic Warner Theatre in Torrington Connecticut.

In addition to his two children, he is survived by his niece, Kathy Kime of Taylors, S.C. Doug will be greatly missed, but the knowledge, wisdom, and innate curiosity he possessed and shared will continue to live on in everyone who knew him. There will not be a formal service as his wishes were for his crew to spread his ashes at sea in a special location.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to his favorite charity, the Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org)
