Old Saybrook — State police on Thursday arrested a local woman who allegedly drove at 25 miles per hour over the Baldwin Bridge and caused traffic in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 to back up behind her.

Leigh Meredith, 56, was charged with driving too slowly, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failure to drive in the proper lane.

According to police, it was about 9 p.m. when a trooper doing speed enforcement spotted Meredith’s 2005 Subaru Legacy creeping over the bridge in the right lane. The bridge has a posted speed limit of 65 mph.

The vehicle then merged onto state Route 9 and then took Exit 1. Police said Meredith failed to stay within the proper lane as she exited the highway.

The trooper pulled Meredith over, at which point she failed field sobriety tests, police said.

The other teenager, Glenn Lee Smith, 18, allegedly was “involved verbally” in the altercation.

Dern is facing charges of breach of peace, third-degree assault and third-degree assault on an elderly person.

Smith was charged with breach of peace.
