Pawcatuck — Sebastian J. “Sammy” Sammataro, 87, of Vine Street in Pawcatuck, passed away at the New London Rehab & Care in Waterford on Sunday, June 18, 2017. He was the husband of the late Joycelyn (Albro) Sammataro.

Born in Pawcatuck, he was a son of the late Rosario and Anna Sammataro.

After serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, Sammy worked as a laborer for the George C. Moore Co. for many years. He was also employed at Davis Standard for nine years, Harris Graphics for three years and with Electric Boat in Groton for more than 17 years until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of the Maria Assunta Society, the Westerly BPOE No. 678 and the Pawcatuck Italo-American Club. He was a lifelong communican­t of St. Michael the Archangel Church.

He is survived by two beloved children, Michael R. Sammataro and his wife, Michelle, of Pawcatuck and Deborah A. Lau and her husband, Scott, of Groton; three grandchild­ren, Stephanie Poole (William) of Ledyard, Jessica Sammataro of Vernon and Meaghan Lau of Groton; as well as two great-grandchild­ren, Avery and Sadie Poole; and several nieces and nephews. Sammy was predecease­d by his brother, Domenic, and five sisters, Josephine Sammataro, Palma Mello, Nancy Harwood, Kathryn Bowden and Rose Sutton.

Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 22, at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. Relatives and friends are also invited to attend a Funeral Liturgy at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Mary’s Church, 95 Main St., Stonington. There is no procession from the funeral home to the church. Burial will follow at St. Michael Cemetery, Pawcatuck. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributi­ons be made to St. Michael Capital Campaign, 60 Liberty St., Pawcatuck, CT 06379 in Sammy’s memory.
