Francis McGuinness

Old Saybrook — Francis R. McGuinness of Old Saybrook died Friday, June 16, 2017.

Francis, son of the late Arthur and Catherine (Fletcher) McGuinness was born in New York City on March 16, 1919, attended private schools in New York and received his bachelor’s of mechanical engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in June 1940. While working for Consolidated Edison, he attended graduate school at Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. In 1942, he started an over 35-year engineering career at then Hamilton Standard Propellers.

Francis married Lillian Bohan, his girlfriend from high school and college days, in June 1942; she died May 18, 1944. At Hamilton Standard, he later met Nancy Williams, an engineering aide from Hartford. They married in January 1948, living first in Old Saybrook, then Glastonbury for 33 years, where they raised their four children. Both participated in church and school activities, followed the New York Yankees and UConn women’s basketball, and attended many Elderhostels (primarily for cross-country skiing and birding). After over 62 years of marriage, Nancy died May 18, 2010.

Francis, better known as Mac, is survived by his daughters, Eileen Marie Milloy of New York City; Deborah and her husband, Paul Scott, and sons, Matthew and Alexander of Farmington; Maggie and her husband, Joseph Cosgrove, and daughter, Melissa of Columbia; his sons, Peter and his children, Molly, Tucker, Zachary and Cooper of Old Saybrook; and Timothy and his wife, Nancy (Harvey), and daughters, Erin and Tara of Marlborough.

The family wishes to sincerely thank Barbara and his neighbors in Old Saybrook for their kindness, friendship and assistance with meals for Mac. In addition, the family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses and support staff at Hartford Hospital, especially the 8th Floor Family ICU team, for the care provided to Mac over the last few weeks.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 30, 2017, at First Church of Christ (Congregational), 366 Main St., Old Saybrook. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
