Groton — Donald E. Harrington, 90, passed away peacefully at the Groton Regency on Monday, June 19, 2017.

Born in Fort Morgan, Colo., on May 8, 1927, he was the son of Frank M. and Mabel E. Harrington. His family later moved to Wells, Nevada. Don was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He worked for First National Stores in several towns in Connecticu­t, first as a meat cutter, then as a store manager.

On June 23, 1952, he married the former Jane M. Curley at St. Joseph Church, New London. She passed away on March 19, 2002.

Don is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Harrington and her husband, David Coleman; grandchild­ren, Andrea Coleman, John Coleman, and Casey Ann Pearce (James); his brother, Rev. Milton Harrington (Norma); daughter-in-law, Kathy Ryan; niece, Pam Huber; and nephew, Larry Harrington.

He was also predecease­d by his son, David J. Harrington; his sister, Alice Lowe; and niece, Judy Battee.

Don was a proud resident of Bellevue Place in New London for over 60 years. His civic and community involvemen­t included the Elks, the Polish American Veterans Club, the New London Town Democratic Committee, the New London Planning and Zoning Commission, and later the New London Board of Assessment Appeals, the Bellevue Place neighborho­od picnics, Justice of the Peace, the New London Boy Scout Council, reading tutor at Harbor School, and AARP safe driving class instructor.

The family would like to thank the Groton Regency nurses, aides and staff for their years of kind and compassion­ate care.

The funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, June 26, 2017, at the Thomas L. Neilan and Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London, with visitation with the family at 10 a.m. Interment with military honors will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, 600 Jefferson Ave., New London.

In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Don’s 63 years as an Elk, the family requests donations be made in his memory to the “Elks National Foundation” and sent to the Groton Lodge of Elks, 700 Shennecoss­ett Road, Groton, CT 06340.
