Schooners sweep NECBL doublehead­er from Ocean State

Groton — Brian Rey's sacrifice fly broke a 2-2 in the sixth inning and Andrew Gazzola followed with an RBI single to lift he Mystic Schooners to a 4-2 win over the Ocean State Waves 4-2 in the first game of a New England Collegiate Baseball League twi-night doublehead­er at Fitch High School on Monday night.

The Schooners (9-6) completed the sweep with a 6-0 shutout in the second game as Tommy Jew (Cal Santa Barbara) hit a pair of solo home runs.

The Wave (10-4) had wiped out a 2-0 deficit with two runs in the top of the sixth inning of the opener before the Schooners regained the lead for good and Turner French (St. John's) pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the save.

Matt O'Neill (Penn) played a role in Mystic's first two runs, singling to lead off the third and eventually scoring on a sacrifice fly by Cam Johnson (Davidson), and then hitting a solo home run in the fifth to make it 2-0.

District 10 softball (11-12)

• Waterford defeated Groton/Mystic 12-2 in Game 1 of their best-ofthree series for the District 10 Little League softball championsh­ip. The game ended after five innings due to the mercy rule. Waterford can wrap up the title with a win in Game 2 of the series on Tuesday at home at 5:30 p.m.

Anna Donahue led the Waterford offense, going 4-for-4 with four RBI, while Maddie Burrows had a pair of triples and three RBI, Anna Bonelli had two hits and Milena Walker added a double to back the two-hit pitching of Anna Dziecinny. Sydney Lyon had a two-run double for Groton/Mystic.

American Legion Zone 6

• Waterford remained unbeaten with a 13-1 win over Danielson in a game stopped after five innings because of the mercy rule. Matt Driscoll pitched the first four innings to earn the win for Waterford (10-0) while Mike Rocchetti was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, Kevin Johnson was 2-for-2 and two RBI and Nick Porazzi was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.

• Hendrik Khoury pitched a one-hitter as New London defeated Norwich 5-1. Khoury walked two, struck out eight and did not allow an earned run for New London (11-51). He also had a three-run double as part of a four-run fifth while Trevor Bolduc added two hits, two runs and an RBI.

District 6 Babe Ruth (15)

Waterford advanced to championsh­ip round with an 11-6 win over Groton. Ben Podeszwa pitched 5.1 innings for the victory and also had three hits while Zach Southard had two hits and four RBI and Jeremiah Harshberge­r added a double. Chip Kamercia led Groton with a double and three RBI while Can Aldinger had a triple.

District 6 Babe Ruth (14)

• Brandt Ogden scored in the tie-breaking run on a passed ball in the sixth inning as Pawcatuck rallied from a 6-1 deficit to defeat East Lyme 7-6 in the losers' bracket. Matt Castagliuo­lo made ad diving catch in left for Pawcatuck in the sixth to preserve the lead. Pawcatuck will host unbeaten Waterford in the championsh­ip round beginning Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Justin Holland and Nate Linicus had two hits for Pawcatuck and Lucas Jones pitched five innings of shutout relieve to earn the win. Aidan Ellis and Kristian Kruszewski had two hits apiece for East Lyme.

District 6 Babe Ruth (13)

• Jack Lathrop allowed only two hits while striking out four of 6.1 innings as Waterford advanced to the championsh­ip round with a 5-2 win over New London. Justin Saad, Jordan Elci and Will Rocchetti each had a hit and run scored for Waterford, which faces unbeaten East Lyme at on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Veterans Field in Niantic.

District 10 baseball (10-11)

• Pawcatuck defeated Lyme/Old Lyme 8-3 as Wyatt Verbridge had two hits and drove in four runs, Dylan Cimini was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, and Aaron LoProsto was 2-for-2 with a run.

• Waterford defeated New London 9-7 as winning pitcher Nathan DePerry had six strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Anthony Jessuck had three hits, including a double, Matthew Ory had a three-run double to break the game open and Caleb Turner also doubled. Landon Hill had two hits, including an RBI double, for New London while Martin Light added two hits.

District 10 baseball (9-10)

• Montville defeated Pawcatuck 149 on Sunday night as Jack Treat went 4-for-4 and winning pitcher Aidan Johnson was 2-or-4 with a triple. Brian Lowe had three hits, including two doubles, for Pawcatuck.
