Mascelli's slam lifts Schooners to victory

Mystic’s Chandler honored as NECBL Pitcher of the Week

Newport, R.I. — Nicholas Mascelli (Wagner) had three hits, including a grand slam to highlight a five-run sixth inning, and scored three times as the Mystic Schooners beat the Newport Gulls 8-5 Monday night.

John Trousdale (Alabama Tuscaloosa) had two hits, including a triple, with two RBI and a run for the Schooners (12-7) and Tommy Jew (California Santa Barbara) had three hits and two RBI. Also, Mike Appel (Central Connecticu­t) scattered three hits over two innings with four strikeouts and no runs to earn the win in relief.

Andrew Daschbach (Stanford) hit a two-run home run for the Gulls (6-14).

Earlier Monday, Mystic right-hander Kevin Chandler (UC Santa Barbara) was named the New England Collegiate Baseball League's Pitcher of the Week for Week 4.

Chandler made his first start for the Schooners a memorable, pitching seven shutout innings, striking out seven and scattering three hits in an eventual 3-0 Mystic victory over Plymouth. In two appearance­s (one start), Chandler has not allowed a run, holding opponents to a .111 batting average.

This past spring, Chandler was a valuable bullpen arm for the Gauchos, while posting 7.81 strikeouts per nine innings. In 21 relief appearance­s and 27.2 innings of work, he struck out 24, while allowing 11 walks and 26 hits.

New York-Penn League

• Randal Alcantara had two hits, including a double, with four runs and an RBI as the Connecticu­t Tigers beat the Brooklyn Cyclones 10-3. Hector Martinez had three hits and three runs for the Tigers (9-4) and Colby Bortles added two hits and two runs. Reed Gamache had three hits and scored for the Cyclones (3-10) and Carl Stajduhar hit a solo home run.

American Legion

• Alex Petchark had a double, three RBI and two runs as Waterford beat Danielson 10-5. Kevin Johnson had two hits, including a double, with two runs and an RBI for Waterford and Mike Rocchetti had a single, run and an RBI. Also, Joseph Scott scored twice and drove in a run.

• Mike Williams had two hits, including a double, as New London beat Endicott (N.Y.) on Sunday, 14-4, to win the Hall of Fame Tournament championsh­ip in Binghamton, N.Y. In Sunday's semifinals, Hendrik Khoury hit a game-winning double and pitched three scoreless innings to earn the win as New London beat Binghamton 5-3.

ECML

• Cody Jones pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts as the Panera Pirates beat Northeast Nine 5-1. Sean Donnelly singled and drove in two runs for the Pirates and Clayton Shaw tripled. Ken Olszewski also doubled.

District 10 baseball (11-12)

• Owen Elmer pitched a one-hitter and struck out nine over five innings as East Lyme defeated New London 5-0. Joel Colorado went 2-for-3 with a home run for East Lyme and Chris Martin added a home run. Derek Mitchell had a hit for New London.

• Anthony Medina had three hits and Nathan Lowry was the winning pitcher, striking out 12 over five innings, as Groton topped Pawcatuck 11-3. Lowry allowed three hits and Nathan Virtue finished off the game by striking out the side in the sixth. Jack Ballou capped a seven-run fifth inning with a home run for Groton. David Duguay and Matt Urso each struck out three for Pawcatuck.

• Mystic blanked Montville 17-0, led by a pair of home runs, three RBI and four runs scored from Luke Noreika. Tucker Tevepaugh also homered and had three RBI in the win, while Joey Basso added three hits. Tevepagh, Noreika and Jackson LaLima hit consecutiv­e home runs in the fourth inning. Marcus Chedaquist and Ryan Ziegler had hits for Montville.

District 10 baseball (10-11)

• Top-seeded East Lyme (40) will meet No. 4 Pawcatuck (2-2) in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Wednesday in East Lyme, followed by the second semifinal between No. 2 Mystic (3-1) and No. 3 Waterford (2-2) at 7:30.

District 10 baseball (9-10)

• Trace Morales was the winning pitcher for Mystic, striking out 10 in a 12-9 victory over Waterford. Finnegan Eck and Griffin Pollard each had three hits for Mystic and Morales added two. Brady Sutman had three hits for Waterford.

District 10 softball (9-10)

• Zoe Zito hit a go-ahead tworun triple and Alexa Collins struck out 11 to earn the win as Waterford beat East Lyme 6-4 in the semifinals. Paige Jessuck singled and scored for Waterford and Zito also turned a double play on a line drive. Avery Stadler singled and scored for East Lyme and Abby Robinson pitched a five-hitter.
