Tuckerton, N.J. — Eleanor (Tverdak) Yuhas passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2017, in Tuckerton after a long illness.

Eleanor was born Nov. 18, 1919, in the Flanders section of East Lyme, to Helen (Havrilla) Tverdak and Michael Tverdak. She was the eldest of four siblings and was raised in both East Lyme and Bayonne, N.J. She has resided in Southern Ocean County, N.J. for the past seven years under the care of her niece, Milissa Larstanna. She was a graduate of Bayonne High School and attended Jersey City State College. She was employed by the Hudson County Board of Vital Statistics before working for Exxon Research and Engineerin­g for many years as a legal secretary.

After retiring from Exxon, she relocated to her beloved island in East Lyme to manage the family campground with her brother, Ed Tverdak. Eleanor was a lifelong animal rights advocate and especially loved her many cats. She enjoyed reading, traveling, music and dancing. She had a special love of cowboys and the old west. Her greatest love was for her family, of which she was the undisputed matriarch. She especially loved her nieces and nephews and she cared for them throughout her lifetime.

She is predecease­d by her parents; her husband, John Yuhas; her brother, Edward Tverdak; and her niece, Jody Wilk.

She is survived by her sisters, Marge Wilk of Bayonne and Manahawkin, N.J. and Marie Blyskal of Lakewood, N.J.; nieces and nephews, Milissa Wilk Larstanna (Frank), Matthew Wilk (Annette), Jason Wilk, Michael Blyskal (Carol), Karen Blyskal, Jeffrey Blyskal (Mary); and many grandnephe­ws and grandniece­s.

She was a communican­t of St. Joseph’s and St. Michael’s Church in Bayonne, N.J. and St. Joseph’s Church in New London.

Mass will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, 2017, at St. Joseph’s Church New London, followed by burial of her ashes in the family plot in East Lyme Cemetery.
