Waterford 11-12 softball to play for state Section 3 title today

Will meet Newington today in Section 3 softball final

Waterford — Due to a rainout the day before, Waterford didn't begin play in the Connecticu­t Section 3 Little League softball tournament (ages 11-12) until Saturday.

The team could very well be the section champion by Sunday.

Waterford swept a doublehead­er, beating Newington 100 in four innings and toppling Coginchaug 11-1 in 3.5 innings to springboar­d the team into the championsh­ip game against Newington beginning at 5:30 p.m. today at Rotary Field.

In the opener, Emma Marelli had three hits to lift Waterford past Newington, including a triple. Anna Donahue added a triple and Ava Roach and Maddie Burrows had doubles. Milena Walker and Anna Dziecinny combined to pitch a one-hitter.

Walker had a single, double and three RBI against Coginchaug and Anna Bonelli had a double and scored. Burrows and Walker combined to pitch a no-hitter.

American Legion Zone 6

• Hunter Nadeau and Trevor Bolduc pitched New London to a doublehead­er sweep of Waterford, winning the opener 2-1 and the second game 3-2.

Nadeau pitched a two-hitter in the opener and Bolduc pitched a four-hitter in the second game for New London (16-6-1). In the first game, Hendrik Khoury singled, stole second and scored on Elijah Martinez's double in the first inning. Khoury scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. He was hit by a pitch, stole second and came home on an error. Shaun Cambisaca had two hits for New London. In the second game, Martinez had an RBI single in the first inning and New London tacked on two runs in the second and held on to win. Jeremy Santos and Martinez had two hits each.

Waterford, which has lost four straight after a 19-0 start, got two hits from Trevor Yeomans and a sacrifice fly from Alex Petchark in the first game. In the second game, Tyler Yeomans singled home a run and Justin Keating had a sacrifice fly. Willimanti­c (19-4) moved into a first-place tie with Waterford by sweeping a doublehead­er from TriTown.

State Babe Ruth (15)

• Amity handed Waterford a 6-3 loss in the state tournament opener at Newtown. Waterford plays the Newtown-Cheshire loser in the double-eliminatio­n tournament at 1 p.m. today. Steve Cantres took the loss, pitching a seven-hitter. Zach Southard tripled home Cantres to give Waterford a 1-0 lead. Liam Kane singled and doubled and Cantres scored twice for Waterford.

State Babe Ruth (14)

• Waterford opened the state tournament with a 16-2 win over Cheshire in a five-inning mercy rule game. Ryan O'Connell and Dan Driscoll combined to pitch a four-hitter. Peyton McNichol, Matt Sanford, Anthony Tonucci, Owen Coderre and O'Connell had two hits each for Waterford and O'Connell, Tonucci,

Coderre and McNichol had doubles. Waterford plays Trumbull at 11 a.m. today.

• Pawcatuck lost to Trumbull 11-1 in six innings. Pawcatuck plays Cheshire in an eliminatio­n game at 2 p.m. today.

State Babe Ruth (13)

• Waterford lost its state tournament opener, falling to New Milford 9-3 at Norwalk. Will Rocchetti doubled and Logan Avin allowed one earned run over six innings for Waterford. Waterford plays the Trumbull-Stamford loser in an eliminatio­n game at noon today.

District 10 baseball (9-10)

• Mystic advanced to the finals with an 11-1 win over Groton. Trace Morales and Dylan Joyce combined for the win, striking out eight. Caleb Watson and Griffin Pollard had two hits each for Mystic. Groton's Jayden Carter doubled.

District 10 baseball (10-11)

• East Lyme beat Waterford 4-0 on Friday in the opener of the best-of-three finals. Connor Tukey pitched a two-hitter for the win. Quinn Killoy was 2-for-2 with a run scoring and Liam Cochrane, Anthony Como and Aiden Koch drove in runs for East Lyme. Kolby Quinn and Caleb Turner had the hits for Waterford.
