Waterford reaches championsh­ip round in Babe Ruth 14s

Waterford — Ryan O'Connell singled home Trey Brennan with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning Wednesday to give the Waterford Babe Ruth 14-year-old team a 2-1 victory over Stamford in the winners' bracket final of the state tournament.

Waterford advanced to the championsh­ip round at 5:30 p.m. Friday against the winner of today's game between Stamford and Trumbull, who will meet in the losers' bracket final.

Brennan singled, stole second base and advanced to third on an error to set the table for O'Connell.

Dan Driscoll earned the win, pitching out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the top of the sixth. O'Connell earned the save. Robert Zawacki started for Waterford, pitching five innings and allowing one run on five hits. Brennan had two hits and Ben Jerome doubled.

American Legion Zone VI

• Trevor Delesderni­er pitched a one-hitter in a game shortened to five innings and Niantic defeated Waterford 11-1 in the first game of a doublehead­er. The second game was suspended by rain after one complete inning and will be made up beginning at 6:30 p.m. today.

With Niantic trailing 1-0 in the third inning, Jared Hunt hit a two-run single through a drawn-in infield to put the team up 2-1. Niantic then responded with eight runs on seven hits in the fourth.

Prior to the game, Niantic presented the 2016 Zone VI championsh­ip plaque to representa­tives of the Niantic American Legion Post, which also presented the colors.

ECML

• Cody Jones threw a one-hit shutout in a rain-shortened game as the Panera Pirates defeated the Three Rivers Sonics 5-0 in the first game of a doublehead­er at Washington Park. The second game was rained out.

Jones struck out eight and walked two to earn his second win in a row. Charlie Moore had a triple, Sawyer Gregory doubled and drove in two runs and Brian McGugan contribute­d a double for the victors.

Jerrod Loy-Smith had the lone hit for the Sonics.

NECBL Mystic suspended

• Heavy rains forced the suspension of the Mystic Schooners game against New Bedford to a date that is yet to be determined. There was no score with no outs in the top of the ninth when the rains came.

NY-PENN LEAGUE Tigers suspended

• The Connecticu­t Tigers' game against Williamspo­rt was suspended after 3 1/2 innings because of rain with the Crosscutte­rs up 1-0. The game will be completed at 11:05 a.m. today and the second game will follow.

District 10 baseball (11-12)

• Anthony Sharples allowed two hits over four innings in a game shortened by the mercy rule and Waterford defeated Mystic 12-1 in the first game of the best-of-three championsh­ip series. Evan McCue, Sean O'Connell and Sharples homered for Waterford. McCue had three hits and Mason Concascia, Jabez White and O'Connell had two hits each in the victory. Jackson LaLima homered for Mystic. Game two of the series is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Friday at Waterford.

District 10 baseball (10-11)

• East Lyme defeated Waterford 21-10 in the final game of the best-ofthree championsh­ip series, coming from down 5-0. Quinn Killoy led the East Lyme attack, going 2-for-2 with a grand slam, five RBI and four runs scored. Sebby DeCosta, Alex Dreyfus, Peter Sherwood and Liam Cochrane each had two hits and three runs scored, Connor Tukey, Anthony Como and Niall Green each had two hits and Alex Salerno added a two-run home run for East Lyme. Tukey was the winning pitcher. Anthony Jessuck, Brian Ingraham, Nathan DePerry and Caleb Turner each had two hits for Waterford.

Softball

• Two District 10 teams will begin play today in their respective state tournament­s. Ledyard will play in the Senior League (ages 15-16) tournament in Orange against either Plainfield/Moosup or Bristol beginning at 5:30 p.m. Waterford opens play in the Little League (11-12) tournament at Elmridge Park in Rocky Hill, meeting Windsor at 7:30 p.m.

In addition, the Little League 9-10-year-old team from Salem/Bozrah begins play in the State Section 3 tournament in Durham, matching up against Glastonbur­y beginning at 5:30 p.m. Salem/Bozrah won the District 10 title Saturday, beating Waterford 11-10 in the deciding game of the best-of-three series. In that game, Haley Smith struck out five to earn the win for Salem/Bozrah. Neva Flickinger scored three runs and Skyler Bell scored two in the victory, while Karly Sorrentino added four RBI, Riley Benway finished with two runs and two RBI and Zofia Maziarz contribute­d with three RBI.
