Vincent beats pair of ex-champs at Invite

Joins Chris DeLucia, Aitken and Cameron in Norwich Invite Final 4

Norwich — It was a big day for Chris Vincent, who took down a pair of former champions in the 91st Norwich Invitation­al golf tournament on Saturday at Norwich Golf Course.

Vincent, the 15th seed, began his day with a 2 up victory over defending champion Nick Harrington, the No. 2 seed, in the first round of the championsh­ip flight, then came back in the afternoon portion of the match play event to defeat another ex-champ, No. 10 Bill Hermanson, 3 and 2 in the quarterfin­als.

Vincent will play No. 3 Drew Aitken in Sunday morning's semifinals at 9:04, while the other semifinal features No. 4 Josh Cameron vs. No. 8 Chris DeLucia at 8:54. The semifinal winners will play in the 18-hole final at 2:15 p.m.

None of the four semifinali­sts have ever won the Invite.

Aitken defeated No. 14 Nick Hedden and No. 6 Sean Vigue, Cameron beat No. 13 David Derosier and No. 12 Rob Neaton, and DeLucia knocked off No. 9 Brian Barder and No. 16 Brett Schulick. Schulick began the day by upsetting top-seeded Ray Duchesneau in the first round, 3 and 2.

State LL softball (11-12)

• Anna Donahue had two doubles and two RBI and Anna Dziecinny pitched a three-hitter as Waterford downed Windsor 9-1 in its opening game of the Connecticu­t Little League tournament ib Rocky Hill. Maddie Burrows had two hits and two RBI, Lily Marelli had a triple with two RBI, and Ava Roach had two hits and an RBI for Waterford, which will play Shelton in the winners' bracket on Sunday at noon. The winner advances to Tuesday's championsh­ip game at 6 p.m. at the same site.

New York-Penn League

• Kirvin Moesquit went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI as the Aberdeen IronBirds thumped the Connecticu­t Tigers 8-1. Luke Ringhofer went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run for the IronBirds (13-10) and Brenan Hanifee scattered six hits over six innings with seven strikeouts for the win. Dylan Burdeaux had two hits, including a double, and scored for the Tigers (11-11) and Colby Bortles hit an RBI double.

NECBL

• Tommy Jew hit a two-run home run as the Mystic Schooners snapped their seven-game losing streak with a 3-0 win over the New Bedford Bay Sox in the first game of a doublehead­er. The Schooners are 14-14.

State Legion tournament

• New Britain scored twice in the first inning and held on to defeat New London 3-1 in the first round of the Connecticu­t American Legion baseball tournament at Bates Woods. Hunter Nadeau took the loss for New London, which finishes 249, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits over three innings, while Hendrik Khoury pitched four innings of one-hit shutout relief. New London, which left seven men on base, scored in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Beeney following consecutiv­e singles by Jeremy Santos, Khoury and Elijah Martinez to start the winning.

In other games affecting Zone 6 teams, Niantic defeated Windsor Locks 2-1 while Winsted blanked Enfield 2-0. Niantic will play at West Harford in Sunday's second round while Winsted will play at Waterford, which received a first-round bye. Both games start at 1 p.m.

District 10 LL baseball (9-10)

• East Lyme won the District 10 Little League (9-10) baseball title with a 17-16 win over Mystic in the decisive third game of the best-ofthree series. East Lyme moves on to the Section 3 state tournament starting Wednesday in Newington. Hayden Chappel had four hits and three RBI for Mystic.

• Griffin Pollard had a double and three RBI and Finn Eck scored twice as Mystic beat East Lyme on Friday night, 8-4, to tie the best-of-three series at 1-1. Trace Morales pitched the win for Mystic and Liam Joyce pitched an inning of relief and had a double and RBI. A.J. Montejano and Chris Cambi both had two hits for East Lyme.

State Section 3 softball (9-10)

• Hailey Smith allowed just four hits and struck out eight while Rylee Benway and Karly Sorrentino each had two runs and two RBI as Salem/ Bozrah opened the tournament with an 11-2 win over Glastonbur­y on Friday night. Skylar Bell, Neva Flickinger and Hailey Smith all scored twice for Salem/Bozrah and Grace DuBrava had a run and an RBI.
